katana Posted March 21, 2016 Report Posted March 21, 2016 Aren't Xflows supposed to have 35mm rubber one side and a 50mm rubber the other or did I imagine that in another lifetime? May help?
jxke Posted March 21, 2016 Author Report Posted March 21, 2016 That's correct, I only noticed when I took them off that they're different. I swapped them around and it seems to sit a little better but still no sump clearance. Now I've slept on it I think I just need to bring the engine up a little more on the mounts? It's about 1/3 of the way up the slot so perhaps bringing it up may raise it enough to give sufficient clearance
jxke Posted March 21, 2016 Author Report Posted March 21, 2016 Someone pointed out to me it might be a cortina sump? And also this picture: Apparently mine could be 3 and need hammering out to look more like 2 so that it fits
katana Posted March 21, 2016 Report Posted March 21, 2016 Cortina's are all front bowl - escorts are opposite - all rear bowl so you can't really mix them up!
colr6 Posted March 21, 2016 Report Posted March 21, 2016 Said it may need a bit of manipulating if it's catching where the sump drops into the bowl. If that's where it is should be no problem about it catching anything in side, but worth rotating engine before refit ment to make sure
colr6 Posted March 21, 2016 Report Posted March 21, 2016 Cortina's are all front bowl - escorts are opposite - all rear bowl so you can't really mix them up! Weren't mk3 cortina ohv rear sump? Could be wrong
jxke Posted March 21, 2016 Author Report Posted March 21, 2016 Cheers for clarifying katana I never knew that And yeah hammering the sump seems the way to go, would just need to make sure it still clears the longer stroke. Thanks for all the advice, I guess the plan is take the engine back out again over the weekend, bash the sump out a bit and then get it back in and see if its clear?
robert maguire Posted March 22, 2016 Report Posted March 22, 2016 My 1600xflow had the 50mm round rubber mounts on it ,in mk2 escort and that was 16xflow from new in Aussie ,not swopped from 1100 etc
katana Posted March 22, 2016 Report Posted March 22, 2016 Weren't mk3 cortina ohv rear sump? Could be wrong Hmmm! Possibly as the picture below has a strange bracket spot welded to the rear underside which does imply its not from an escort!
jxke Posted March 22, 2016 Author Report Posted March 22, 2016 I was wondering what that was when I saw it - so it's a possibility it's not an Escort sump, hence the clearance issues
jxke Posted March 22, 2016 Author Report Posted March 22, 2016 Mystery solved, it's apparently a pre x-flow capri sumpChange to an escort sump and I should be good to go, or get the hammer out on my 1100 sump 2
jxke Posted March 30, 2016 Author Report Posted March 30, 2016 Might finally be finishing this off this weekend, using the 1100 sump but the question is, any thoughts on what I can/should do about the baffle - if anything needs to be done that is?
colr6 Posted March 30, 2016 Report Posted March 30, 2016 Seem to remember the sump depth is different, so make sure the big ends don't hit the sump.
jxke Posted March 30, 2016 Author Report Posted March 30, 2016 Yeah that's right, and I've seen a few people bash 11/1300 sumps out for 1600's as they can be hard to find so that is my plan I reckon
jxke Posted March 30, 2016 Author Report Posted March 30, 2016 Cool thanks, guessing a little heat to make it easier and hit it with something a bit softer so it doesn't crack? Still not sure about the baffle either
colr6 Posted March 30, 2016 Report Posted March 30, 2016 Just fit the sump rotate engine by hand a couple of revolutions, the big end bolts will mark the sump where att is required. Fit sump with no gasket to ensure adequate clearence before fitting up properly
jxke Posted April 2, 2016 Author Report Posted April 2, 2016 Bingo, done it today and I have absolutely miles of clearance
jxke Posted April 2, 2016 Author Report Posted April 2, 2016 Thanks for all the advce, I've Just got to piece it back together now, started to but it rained before I got to finish so I'll continue tomorrow, just little bits some wiring an exhaust etc.
