While getting our equivalent to the MOT done each year I used to get offended when they would ask me how many others I had been to before hand trying to get it passed. Damn cheek!

How does your mot differ from ours ? Have heard rightly or wrongly they don't allow welded patches it has to be a full panel replacement, is that true?

Thats not true. Welded patches are perfectly acceptable as long as its done well. Given some panels that are no longer available for classic cars such a policy would totally destroy the classic car scene. Some modern cars have panels glued in so nothing wrong with a good weld I say. (As long as Im not the one doing it as even my old mother criticises my simple soldering!)

Im not sure how comprehensive both systems are but I suspect your MOT is a bit tougher than ours. Ours is more of a safely check rather that a thorough mechanical one. We dont call it an MOT but rather getting a pink slip. So named in that in the days when it wasnt computerised the forms they would fill in were pink. Its really weird when you watch American shows and they are racing for pink slips as it seems no big deal to me especially if the last one was a shocker they can have it! If a car has been out of registration for longer than 3 months then it has to get a blue slip which is far more comprehensive and harder to pass.

How rigorous and professional is the MOT process in the UK? From the brief glimpses of it in motoring shows they seem to be on the ball and even a good knowledge of classic cars. Here the guys that do the pink slips can be a good mechanic if your lucky but most likely pretty lame when it comes to older vehicles. I remember two idiots I visited over the years and knocked back my car. One was because I had a Momo wheel on the car which had been there for the 20 years of inspections prior. "Cant have non original steering wheels" he said. Having been on the car for decades I naturally asked why? "Because the horn switches in the centre never work properly compared to originals" which is true I have seen many with issues but proceeded to tell him that the horn was on the stalk on the Escort so that doesnt apply. He just got agitated he had been caught out and told me to like it or leave it. My solution was to remove the Momo centre button and use a European RS2000 centre cap on the very same Momo steering wheel to make it look original. He passed it without question and the cap is still there to this day.

The other muppet I remember was one who was convinced all Escorts and Capris needed their rear leaf spring bushes replaced. He would go to the back ones and stick a screw driver in underneath the lip and wobble it about and say "see how loose that is the bush has gone" I explained to him they were triangle shaped in the centre and of course you could get a screw driver in them as they didnt fill the round hole like a solid one did. He refused to believe that. Given the bushes I had in there had only been in for a couple of years I just removed the shackles and gave them a good scrub and tyre blacked them. Again they passed without question. The lack of knowledge is forgivable but the lack of listening to someone who may know is irritating by these cowboys.
