Downstairs Dave Posted May 29, 2016 Report Posted May 29, 2016 Thought I would introduce myself, I live in Horley Surrey and I own a 105E Anglia and a Mk1 Cortina GT. Both are highly modified, Anglia is on the road and the Cortina is still in construction. The Anglia looks old school but runs a 2.0 Zetec, it is a genuine 40k mileage car with original paintwork except for below chrome mouldings, interior is all original and still has the old Anglia smell inside. It has a Team Deville rear suspension setup with an Alachi front end with 2.8i front struts. Attached to the engine is a type 9 with Retro Ford sump and ancillaries, for induction it has a Chester Sports Car bike carb setup. The Cortina is a genuine GT but was a 4 door, so I have converted it to 2 door, and because I bought it as a bare shell I've decided to make it into a road race car, i.e. no interior and modified suspension. Rear suspension is a home built independent with Mazda MX5 Torsen LSD diff and Hubs. Front suspension is a Retro Ford assembly with Gaz Gold struts. Engine is a new 2.0lt Zetec with Omex throttle bodies. Gearbox is from a Mk3 Mazda MX5 with RX8 carbon fibre propshaft. I decided to build the car in bare metal and then when everything fits ok tear it down and paint it in Spruce Green. I know there not technically old school but I'm sure the more time that passes they will be.. Many thanks and I look forward to posting on here soon. Dave.
colr6 Posted May 29, 2016 Report Posted May 29, 2016 Welcome to OSF . Great cars ........to all out there .... There is someone as daft as me with a modded Anglia and a Tina GT 1
khanlad Posted May 29, 2016 Report Posted May 29, 2016 There is no one out there as daft as you col! Nice cars I've seen pictures of an escort with a rear end set up like that, nice
colr6 Posted May 29, 2016 Report Posted May 29, 2016 I could always teach someone, this pupil has a good start
robert maguire Posted May 30, 2016 Report Posted May 30, 2016 Interesting cars especially the mx5 rear end in Ford.Did you use the mx5 subframe etc.I break mx5,s here and I am very interested as I have Torsen 3.9 and 4.1 diffs here with shafts etc.Sorry I looked at pics again and see you built the diff etc in tubular frame.Looks great. Some work in that !! Also you say the mx 5 mk3 box fitted Zetec engine??Never heard of that.I know some lads say it will fit Duratec but not zetec?? I have mk2 escort with 2.0 blacktop Zetec and like the idea of maybe 6 speed mx5 box. 1
Admin Mk2Jo Posted May 31, 2016 Admin Report Posted May 31, 2016 Hello and welcome! Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk 1
Downstairs Dave Posted May 31, 2016 Author Report Posted May 31, 2016 Yep made the Rear sub frame myself as I had to narrow it to match the Cortina track as the MX5 is nearly 6" wider. As for the gearbox, I had to use an adapter as the bolt pattern is different< this was made by Dave (Retro Ford) and as the car is going to be very light I decided to use the 5 speed box.
robert maguire Posted May 31, 2016 Report Posted May 31, 2016 Looke good.Is that mk2 mx5 gearbox or from mk3 2006 onwards.I sell mx5 bits and I have sold several early mk1 mx5 boxes for mazda powered escorts etc.The early gearbox (5 speed) has exposed selector from lever to box so apparently you can cut the top section off and move it forward to next bolt holes and it lines up with escort tunnel.I matched up mx5 box to escort mk2 box and its approx4/5 inches longer than mx5 so gearlever would be in back seat of escort !! Cutting down early boxes seems easier.I see your gearbox has enclosed linkage so could be messy? Does the spacer not move spigot back too far in clutch etc or how did you compensate for this. Fit crankshaft to flywheel spacer of same thickness? I can send you pics if you think it might make things easier for you
sierra1off Posted July 6, 2016 Report Posted July 6, 2016 He is too modest, I have been following this build from the start and he is a clever B. Check it out here and be amazed :- http://www.buysellcortina.co.uk/forums/index.php?/topic/56964-mk1-gt-resto2-door-conversion/
