preacherman Posted September 12, 2016 Report Posted September 12, 2016 I have blue struts with vented discs. The previous owner said they were bilstein. How can I tell .they have a ford stamp and part number ends AA Neil
Moderator Rally Pack 2000 Posted September 12, 2016 Moderator Report Posted September 12, 2016 Capri Bilsten struts also usually have the embossed square with Bilstein written inside. You can also tell by a nut at the bottom of the leg holding the insert in and also it should have removable steering arms. There are also three holes for where you may think a disk backing plate would go but on a Bilstein strut they werent tapped as the vented disks that went with the struts were too thick for backing plate so they didnt bother tapping the holes.
OSF Contributor Mexican Gerbil Posted September 12, 2016 OSF Contributor Report Posted September 12, 2016 My bilsteins have a square bilstein stamp on the casing. He might have put bilstein inserts in. I'm guessing you'd have to take the apart for that.
RWL81P Posted September 12, 2016 Report Posted September 12, 2016 theyre usually quite easy to spot bilsteins unless theyre modified standard capri struts. the billies should have a ribbed rubber dust cover over the shaft behind the spring, and the shaft will be as fat as the strut casing.
preacherman Posted September 12, 2016 Author Report Posted September 12, 2016 There is a ford logo on the strut , ribbed dust cover over the shaft is there and looks meaty, vented discs as well. The suspension is firm and said to come off a 2.8 capri
RWL81P Posted September 12, 2016 Report Posted September 12, 2016 sounds like you got 2.8 billies then. mine do have a square with bilstein inside it next to the ford badge tho. you should be able to put your fingers through the spring and squeeze it to see if the inserts are fat. or a thin shaft like on the capri or rs2000 inserts.
