thebassman Posted May 5, 2017 Report Posted May 5, 2017 Hi, I want to fit a remote servo to my Escort MK2 1600 Sport to accomadate Twin 40's and smarten up the engine bay by removing the long one. Can anybody tell me what remote servo to buy and seperate master cylinder to fit to the bulkhead and onto the pedal box without altering it. I dont want to fit a new pedal box. There seems to be be few different one's available so I would appreciate any advice. Thanks, Jeff.
Paul brex Posted May 5, 2017 Report Posted May 5, 2017 Best thing to do Jeff is give burton power or rally design and tell them what you want. They do a few different kits. Explain to them what brakes you are running front and rear and they will guide you in the right direction.
buzzard Posted May 6, 2017 Report Posted May 6, 2017 I'm looking at the same . I have a mk3 cortina and want to fit a zetec on throttle bodies . I need to remove the servo to to make space and was thinking of a remote set up but unsure how they work . Like you I don't want a lot of aftermarket fittings , I like to keep it ford .
thebassman Posted May 6, 2017 Author Report Posted May 6, 2017 Thanks Paul, will give Burton's a ring next week and will post reply. Cheers.
katana Posted May 6, 2017 Report Posted May 6, 2017 The master cylinder sizing 'should be' the same as whatever was fitted to the std servo setup but if your remote servo has a different leverage ratio then all bets are off! The desire to 'keep it all Ford' may be tricky as most cars either didn't have assisted brakes or came equipped with the integrated tower types. Some of the earlier win Cams had remote Girling Servos where the battery normally lives. A few people have upgraded to remote servo's inside the cabin below the dash using classic Mini Cooper S servo's. The big problem though is if using a single circuit master cylinder and single servo, it MUST be sized correctly as the balance front to rear will be out of whack and if you get a leak you'll lose all your brakes!
thebassman Posted May 7, 2017 Author Report Posted May 7, 2017 Thanks Katana, Not bothered about keeping it All Ford, any make of remote servo and master cylinder will do as long as it's compaterble. Would like a straight 'bolt on' set up with just the brake pipes to be altered. Cheers.
colr6 Posted May 7, 2017 Report Posted May 7, 2017 A few people have used mgb remote servos to good effect. 1
thebassman Posted May 8, 2017 Author Report Posted May 8, 2017 Thanks for that, there are a few new MGB one's on e-bay at the moment which should do. Sorry for being a 'dumb nut' but can you suggest a master cylinder that will bolt on to the bulkhead and connect straight onto the pedal box ??? Cheers.
colr6 Posted May 8, 2017 Report Posted May 8, 2017 MG Hive is prob your best bet for a servo (new) you would have to measure up the stud mounts to see if a std non servo master will fit. You need the same bore size as original.
khanlad Posted May 8, 2017 Report Posted May 8, 2017 I got mine from mgb hive, think if you contact them direct its a bit cheaper than ebay? Think its only a few quid but it all adds up
thebassman Posted May 25, 2017 Author Report Posted May 25, 2017 Remote sorted , will purchase from e-bay but need to know where I can purchase a master cylinder from that will go straight on. Holes are 3.1/4" apart and bulkhead to brake pedal pin is 5.3/4" long. Any help ? Cheers.
katana Posted May 25, 2017 Report Posted May 25, 2017 As its a Brit car - Girling master cylinders would be appropriate and I think their mounting holes are pretty standard across everything? The push rod could always be lengthened with an internally threaded tube?
John escort mk1V6 Posted May 25, 2017 Report Posted May 25, 2017 I build this years ago and i did have it on mine estate to try it and the brakepedal was hard , 23.8 mm a booster from a taunus tc2/3. But now i have pedalbox with to cilinders on it. And i want to build it on mine mk1V6 with a electric vacuumpump. It is a fit tight and i got to loose a fit hardboard dash.
thebassman Posted May 26, 2017 Author Report Posted May 26, 2017 Struggling to find a master cylinder (probably cos i dont know what I'm looking for) Can anyone provide a link or where to look ? Thanks.
colr6 Posted May 26, 2017 Report Posted May 26, 2017 Not sure how this would work if your on tandem m/ cylinder or is it on single circuit brakes. If your on single circuit brakes then shouldn't be a problem by using a remote m/ cylinder off a bias pedal box same bore size as your original m/ cylinder. Will require drilling two new holes though. If it's on tandem master ( dual circuit) you may experience problems servoing one circuit unless you go onto a very expensive twin circuit remote servo.
thebassman Posted June 8, 2017 Author Report Posted June 8, 2017 All sorted now, met a really helpful dealer at Classic Ford Show (Santa Pod) by the name of Richard Lee of Classic Car Spares, Southwell, Notts. He provided me with the Remote Servo and master cylinder and full fitting kit for £160. Just got to fit it now but it looks very straightforward. For anyone else considering doing the same the parts supplied are listed below. Remote servo ; Powertune TT3949Z Part No. RLE 72696 Master Cylinder : Off MK3 Cortina 5/8" Bore (.625) Direct replacment and bolts straight on. Hope this helps and thanks to everyone for their advice. Cheers. 1
