Ray Posted April 7, 2018 Report Posted April 7, 2018 Can anyone tell me what the process is and where i can get it done that the manufacturers use to plate steel wheels black
preacherman Posted April 7, 2018 Report Posted April 7, 2018 Do you mean the entire wheel or the black insert on 1300e / mexico steel wheels. If it's the inserts then you can buy pre cut decals and they are a good fit.
Ray Posted April 7, 2018 Author Report Posted April 7, 2018 the entire wheel, all steel wheels seem to have a black plating from new, its this that I want to find out what type of plating it is, and where I can get it done
deltamal Posted April 8, 2018 Report Posted April 8, 2018 I get some of the parts that I make black plated for identification purposes, they are a matt finish and can be a bit streaky here and there, fine for what they are used for, but I would have thought a semi-matt or gloss paint would give a better result for wheels, the plating can be scratched easily as well.....
DT36 Posted April 8, 2018 Report Posted April 8, 2018 I would have thought a matt black powder coat would do the job nice and look very neat.

deltamal Posted April 8, 2018 Report Posted April 8, 2018 The plating I have done is zinc base with black passivation, I’ve got Ford sport steel wheels on my Mk5 Cortina Crusader, had them powder coated in gloss silver, got the black vinyl decals from eBay fitted then lacquered the complete wheel, they look good! If Mr Ford plated them black and then sprayed silver it was probably for cheapness!
