preacherman Posted May 27, 2018 Report Posted May 27, 2018 So started the escort today. Took a few goes but it got there.let it idle for a few minutes then it burst into flames. Lots of wet rags to smoother the flames. I could not stop it. Took my t shirt off and soaked it in water along with a coat and it stopped. I was actually about to give up on it and call it a day when it was burning. Damage Cam belt Top hose Dizzy cap and leads. Air filter Small burn to my tit, wrist and neck The cause was a split fuel pipe spraying fuel on the dizzy cap.
colr6 Posted May 27, 2018 Report Posted May 27, 2018 Sorry to hear about your misfortune, modern day fuels have a lot to answer for. Had some expensive braided hose on mine that started to leak fuel and only a year old. One has to be careful with what type of hose you use. Just looking, is that a foam air filter fitted ? That's one thing I wouldn't use, they tend to disk fuel up and one backfire it's up in smoke.

AdamMc Posted May 27, 2018 Report Posted May 27, 2018 I was very nearly in the same boat a couple of weeks ago. Inadequate fuel hoses split badly and dripping on exhaust manifold, luckily caught it in time as I smelt it. They were covered with braided material so really hard to spot. I've seen this story an awful lot recently. Modern fuel is eating through this stuff.
preacherman Posted May 27, 2018 Author Report Posted May 27, 2018 Just noticed I singed my eyebrows. Yes it is a foam one and it made an horrible mess and the black smoke was choking. The fuel pipe is probably 12 mths old. Gonna change it all out.
mk1del Posted May 27, 2018 Report Posted May 27, 2018 Section in classic car weekly ,same thing ethanol in unleaded fuel rotting fuel pipes stored over winter, something we should all check
colr6 Posted May 27, 2018 Report Posted May 27, 2018 Found this but the picture didn't come out with it...doh. This proves there is pipe availiable to combat the ethanol attact ! Would suspect it been made by Gates it will be of good quality. johnnyspencer Posted May 27, 2018 Report Posted May 27, 2018 The fuel pipes I have just fitted to mine were stolen off a diesel lighting generator I was working on at work. I think I'll buy some new ones now, and check my fire extinguishers!
DT36 Posted May 27, 2018 Report Posted May 27, 2018 Neil, I have a DTI, timing wheel and strobe gun here, but not home until 10th June. What colour hoses you going for? I have blue Samco silicone on mine, but want to change them for black. Also got a Bosch dizzy cap and some leads I can lend you until you get new. Not sure if you can wait until then, but they're here if needed.
preacherman Posted June 3, 2018 Author Report Posted June 3, 2018 I fitted the gates barricade fuel pipes along with new gates cam belt. The inlet manifold and carb were full of melted foam from the air filter. Back on the road now, as a bonus I found a kn air filter in my scrap pile. 3
preacherman Posted June 12, 2018 Author Report Posted June 12, 2018 Still some burnt foam bits in the carb again. Another clean out of the carb and jets and much better now. Gonna rip it a new arse tomorrow. 1
