And it has to be said, whether it's a Pinto, Zetec or Duratec, they are all a damn sight more reliable than a f*****g Renault

Well a standard renault 2 litre engine MAKES MORE power than a duratec with a £5000 performance package bolted to it !!!!!!! YKT!

well if they are that good bolt one into your escort for less than a duratec if you think you can

Ok people a quick question for you all then :D . Who's actually thinking of a standard duratec install after finding out how much it costs to get fitted + working in your car ? If your heart is set on fitting a modern twin cam 16v engine then bear in mind that a standard XE is better / cheaper to tune / fits in easier + cheaper / has a strong bottom end as standard and has a cosworth designed head which makes excellent power . Also a Honda S2000 engine has 240 bhp as standard ( more when modified ) and renaultsport clio 2 litre engines make 200 bhp as standard ( 230+ bhp on throttle bodies etc) . If anyone starts moaning and saying "but they're not ford engines though" well neither is a duratec ( it's a mazda engine ) . If fitting anyone of the above engines then it doesn't matter anyway because NONE of them are proper oldskool power so who cares ?

1 pintosauraus and 1 zetec for me
 16v pintosauraus for me , failing that an 8v pintosauraus with an H.P.E. sticker for the duratecs too read as i go past !!!!!!!

id go for a zetec simply because they are readily available, the cost to fit a pinto to a mk1 tina is similar to that of a zetec (if it ran on carbs - which is fine) and it doesnt weigh the same as a church

after all 150-160bhp is still going to be quicker than a 78bhp in the same car

Well a x-flow is only about 14 kilos lighter than a pinto , Dave roberts weighed them both the other week , so not much difference .

i didnt think it was as little as that

one thing that has been missed of this discussion is a 300bhp Pinto ... you know one that can match the Duratec ..

That will be one from Tim Swadkin.. at almost £6,756.25 ....

Then you have to buy the carb/throttle bodies , a trick exhaust manifold and a few other bits ... like a complete bottom end

The £6,750 is just for the head

"WARRIOR FULL ENGINE: The 2.0 litre WARRIOR engine to "Historic" specification is supplied as a fully built dry sumped unit including all engine parts, exhaust manifold, carburettors, ignition system. The engine is supplied "run in" and fully tested on our dynanometer ready for the customer to install. These units produce around 245 BHP with a wide torque band which is very suitable for rallying. Recent back-to-back testing against an equivalent 2.0 litre BDG showed that the WARRIOR engine gave a significant advantage in torque.

WARRIOR FULL ENGINE: £15,750.00 + VAT"

But I love that engine.. looks the bollox and sounds the bollox and goes like the clappers ... and works out cheaper than BDG.

Put that head on the 2.2/2.3/2.4 bottom ends and you have a good torquey 300 horse

Or shall we head into some of the other exotic pinto's out there that are capable of plus 260bhp

The realms of Wilcox and Millington

How about a 2.6 Millington Diamond .... if you want to know how much ask Bernard ...hes got one

But does a "genuine" 300 bhp duratec actually exist though ? Who's got one and how much did it cost ? Also will it beat the oldskool power in a race off the traffic lights against the clock  ? Get one someone so we can find out if it's any good or not please . If you were to find a "genuine" 300 bhp duratec can we organise to bring it up to the pod for some action please :lol::lol: . It can race the 8v pintos , 16v pintos + XE's for a crack at the title :ykt::thumbsup:

Danny LT's 301bhp duratec beat all commers at Avon Park last year Gaz..

Steve Boughtons engine made over 300bhp at T&R last month and your so quick to point out their rollers apparently "read low"

Cosworth have had loads of 300bhp Duratecs on their cranks and their 250 horse Formula Atlantic engine just have the rods and pistons changed to get 250 bhp

Scholar have produced engines that are knocking on the door of 300 ..

and thats at 7500rpm with their 2.5's on the standard crank.

And DLT's engine was up against everything from other Duratecs to Zetecs, pinto's and x-flows an S2000 engine and the 2nd fastest of the day went to an XE.. on the day the Duratec won, and the cars where all withing a few KG's of each other

Mark, next time you passing the "grumpy old men" ask them about Steves B's engine... you know me in one ear and out the other when it comes to oily bits

Saying that i may pop down there next Monday ... what time you about.. i''l bring the biccys you bring the milk

Terrible shame that it's in a poxy caterham thing though  , anything goes well in them bloody things . Was this the car he ran at the brighton speed trials last year then

Well in answer to your question I am, well still trying to decide between the various options. Though Duratec is looking like the winner. As for the Honda F20C engine, if you think the Duratec is expensive to install and tune well just look at the costs involved for the Honda. Take a look at spoon, gruppe-s, etc and see what they want for parts. As for 240 BHP from standard, well I have seen a fair few on rolling roads and not one made 240, the closest was 230, and the best mine ever made was 195! I can’t comment on the XE or Renault lumps.

It is all down to personal taste / needs at the end of the day, I need a reliable engine for my car that I can drive and my girlfriend can drive that has reasonable power and economy.

I’d love an N/A cosworth unit but the cost is prohibitive. Pound for pound the Zetec / Duratec offers me the best compromise. That’s my opinion no one else’s.

Fare enough mate but i can't see how it costs more to fit a honda S2000 engine into an escort than a duratec does ? Then the honda engine is far superior to a duratec anyway , it comes with a rear wheel drive 6 speed gearbox and 230- 240 bhp as standard . An £8000 duratec engine with the same power won't touch one of these motors for reliablity in a million years

A low mileage F20C and box and you are looking at 2K+. Add to that good induction and exhaust parts and you are spending more than a Duratec install. I can pick up a low mileage Duratec for around £500. So that gives me a £1500 head start. Plus you need to drive around at over 6300 rpm to enjoy the power. Yes it is a superior to the Duratec but is tuned to the hilt out of the box which makes further tuning expensive. As for reliability well with Honda that is a given, I only know of two that let go, one was bouncing off the rev limiter with 130,000+ miles on the clock, the other had a lot of tuning work done.

pictures264.jpg You can't beat a 16v pinto install , now that's a proper engine

That could just be a Duratec there .... dry sumped ,,, TBs and ECU .. needed a tunnel for the box ... yep and one off chassis mounts instead of the mounts that fit to the escort x-members that you can buy for the Duratec .. oh and it aint running, Can you by an exhaust that fits one of those in an escort like you can fro the Duratec of Tony Law ?

On Paper they look a good engine ... but then so do loads of others
