Think you have answered your own question. Many years ago I assisted someone who did autocross / grasstrack racing. Most of the competitors used K&N filters some used Pipercross but everyone fully cleaned the filters after every run. And never ever used to oil them as it would not clean afterwards. The Mann filter (C3665) is readily available over here also at BurtonPower. (17 quid). If ordering directly at Burton or anywhere in the UK is too costly ask someone to buy one for you and let them post it over to Aus.

PS: looking at the photos are you sure you are not on Mars?

Why would they not clean after oiling, is that between races or after a meeting? Surely the filters could be solvent washed and left to dry before re-oiling in normal usage?

After every heat. Used dry the sand and mud can be cleaned by compressed air. When oiled the sand and mud sticks to the oil and is very hard to get off. It acts like glue.
