Yep, good write up and plenty of pics too. Great way to start my subscription. I`ll be at next years Ace cafe meet for sure but hopefully this time with my Mk2 3.0 JPS. Well done for getting so many capris in one place Kev.

Cheers guys, I still want one though as they are not just for going straight I`ll see if there is any budget left in the summer.

Thats right, Chelmsford Essex. Just drop off at mine, he only works a couple of miles from me, and I see him most Thursdays anyway as his kids go to the same swimming classes as mine. Small World sometimes.
-
Well I got them done. The same way they used to do them for leda. The use a special former under a Hyraulic press and work there way along the length of the spring. Mine have been lowered 45-50 mm (nearly 2") He says he would be happy to do more at £50 a pair so long as they came through me (as it is a weekend extra job for him) and probably wouldn`t want direct enquiries to the company. But he would only do it on the understanding that if the spring fails during the process it would be at the persons own risk. He did 3 for me and they all survived.

So perhaps a couple of tenths off the 60 foot time would be a more realistic expectation?

I was reading an old classic ford mag last night and a guy with a Cologne engined Cortina was saying that the fitting of an LSD found him 1.5 seconds on the strip!! When I used to run my capri on the strip it only ever had an open diff and would run times as low as 15.4 to 16.2 depending on the track. My only doubt is that Ford don`t quote the 2.8i special as being any quicker than the early open diff model?? I would obviously like to fit an LSD to my next Capri (funds permitting) but I was interested to hear your experiences on improvements in 1/4 mile times after fitting an LSD.

How sweet are those Revo`s -
Yep The Arena one was good, I got a pair of 2.8 single leafs for a tenner, and a JPS wheel cap for free. I will try to go again this year.

Have a good day! Got friends coming over so I can`t make it.
-
Cheers But I think this guy will help me as he used to them back in the day. Probably did my old multi-leafs 15 odd years ago.

I`ve tracked down an ex employee of Horner & wells at another engineering firm and he says they will have a look at them for me. So hopefully I`m sorted now. Thanks for the response

Thanks for the reply I did try Gaz and the guy there said they don`t do them but said he used to kink the ends under a hydraulic press without heat. He suggested making a a radiused former so as to spread the load as this is how he used to do them apparently. Anyway, it didn`t work for me as it cracked the spring. Luckily I have a spare set to practice on, but it is still a waste. So heat is definatley required but I don`t have access to Oxy acetylene gear. Leda used to farm them out to a local engineering company called Horner and Wells, but they too have since closed down. Maybe I`ll try to find where their old employees went.l I don`t know how expertly these things are done. Some say just heat and bend, but if I was paying good money for it tobe done I would expect some sort of heat treatment to temper the steel.

someone must know?, plenty of people have them on their cars.

looks like an ordinary open standard differential to me.

Anyone know where I can get my single leaf spings decambered? I`m in Essex so the nearer the better. Leda used to do them but they are no more..

What size tyres for my Capri? Best handling for 7" rim
danny69 replied to danny69's topic in OLD SKOOL FORD CHAT
Taking up on what Messenjah says the 7" rims I`m looking at seem to either the Revolites in a -7 offset or rs 4 spokes in a +5 offset. I think -7 on a very low car could be an issue, which is a shame as I love revolites. Any idea what offset the original revolutions have? -

In the past I`ve had 185 60 13 on 5.5J rims, 205 60 13 on 7J and 215 50 BF goodrich on 7J aswell. So I know they all fit depending on wheel offset, but I guess I`m looking for the best compromise between handling and looks. From memory the 215`s were liable to roll about on the front or atleast that is how it felt and they understeered badly even in the dry but on the rear they were great and gave good grip for the 1/4 mile, infact my best times were on these. The bad experience on the front may have been down to the make of tyre combined with the fact I was running 250lb springs that were putting more work into the tyre. 205`s were okay but just looked like a little tall to my taste, and the 185`s were good with the standard capri suspension and gave good acceleration due to the smaller diameter butI am guessing they would give less bite off the line. So I am thinking of 205 50`s (dunlop sp9000) or if someone could convince me that a different make of 215 50 (kumhos?) would handle well on a 7j on the front then I might go that way instead. I`ll probably end up with 205 60`s though Cheers for the input so far -

I`ve seen that size on the race capri`s in the top hat series, but I think they were using 8" rims. Would they roll to much on a 7"? -

Out of interest do you think a 185 60 13 handle better on a 5.5J or a 7J wheel? -

I didn`t know you could get a 195 50 13, who does those? Sounds like a good option. -

I am planning on having 7 x 13 " rims on my Capri but i am still chewing over what size tyres to go for. 205 60 are the normal route but they do bulge slightly and may rub on a lowered car and are a little tall for my taste, whereas a 185 60 would look more pleasing from the side and might roll less on the rim, but would presumably offer less grip??. Or maybe 205 on an 8" rim if I could bet more offset? Any thoughts guys? -
That's it, confuse me again, just when I had made up my mind
-
Yeah Cheers, I think I`ll just paint them Although I might have to re-tap or helicoil one of the caliper retaining bolt threads first as it has been badly drilled out in the past and looks a bit crooked....

I currently have the coilover struts for my 3.0l capri on the bench for a repaint. They are back to bare metal, I also have some 5mm steel plate marked out for the wedges, but as my car will never see a rally stage is it worth my while cutting out the plates and getting them welded in? I`m only in two minds because my Hacksaw is blunt

I`d spend time looking pictures and at other peoples Capris and choose you favourite over a period of time. We can all give our own somewhat biased (Mk2 3.0S cough cough) opinions but at the end of the day it has to be your choice sat on the drive.
