Thanks for the response Chris.
I appreciate that the upgrade is appropriate if you are running big power but I was just concerned by the misleading nature of the article in saying how poor the stock brakes were.
I would hate for someone to spend £800 on brakes hoping to stop 100 foot sooner at 70 mph when the reality is that they may well not see that kind of improvement if their current set up was already in good order.
I won`t e-mail Ben directly as it doesn`t matter "that much" on this occasion as I won`t be splashing out on brakes anytime soon.
Cheers
Danny
Doesn`t anyone from Retro Ford look at this forum anymore?
Some kind of acknowledgement would be nice, otherwise a cynic might say that as you don`t have an answer you were just plugging a brake upgrade that you were given cheap or free as an advert for the manufacturer.
If the lack of reply is simply that you don`t have the time then perhaps this forum is no longer worthwhile.?
I got some new backs made up for mine and just transfered the letters over. I drilled the new plates using the old ones as a template.
The company who made the backs was called Simpsons (in Stoke I think) and they charged £20 for the two inc. delivery.
Tel: Simpson & Co
01782 212705
They also supplied me with the clips to hold the Letters in place.
The bevel round the edge isn`t the same as the originals and i wasn`t blown away by the quality, but now I have put the numbers and letters on they look good.
They are available with black or polished ally surround, i went for the polished to match the original.
If the car is already lowered I am not sure you need one. I think they were originally for rally cars which were running above standard ride height.
I have one for my capri but I don`t think it is worth fitting as it doesn`t even have the extra centre bush.
I like these pratical demos of how well stuff works, so good on you for doing such tests. Keep them coming
But I thought the test was a little harsh on the Capri 2.8 vents, afterall not only were they already well used but it sounds like you needed a bias valve if the rears were locking first. You will never get maximum braking effort if the rears are locking up before the fronts.
I have seen some old road tests from back in the seventies on 3.0 litre Capris and they managed stopping distances and g-forces much better than the ones you got from the Escort.
I still appreciate the feature though despite the above
The ratio is usually on a tag inside the housing, so it means taking the diff cover off, if it is an atlas.
Or as you say see how many wheel turns you get for one turn of the prop.
Great day. Fantastic weather. No pics though sorry.
I saw petrol head doing some good times in his crossflow Mk2 and a couple of other quick cosworth powered escorts.
I am coming to watch as my capri isn`t ready yet
But ny mate is bringing his 200bhp rs turbo with new toyo R888s which should be quick if he can get the FWd off the line but it will be nice to see him get beaten by some proper OSF
I love this car and the ride height, but i remember when my capri was lowered 2 3/4" at the front and my TCAs were angled slightly upwards which isn`t ideal, so I guess these would be too, perhaps more so.
Nice shos Lee
What size is the hole in an atlas axle where the leaf spring locates?
I want to make sure I have the correct washerfor the leafspring when I rebulid the car.
Cheers
That yellow V8 Capri article surprised me. The owner has had that car advertised on Autotrader for over a year now with no takers, yet reckons he doesn`t want to sell it??.
Looked like another advert to me.
