Hope this isn't a repost... I was watching Watchdog last week (I think it was) and they had an article where people had sent their driving license to DVLA, and when they came back the details were wrong, for example one guy who was an advanced motorcycle instructor had motorcycles removed. When he queried it with them, they basically said 'prove it'. So he has had to re take his 'bike test. There were a few others with similar problems. So if you send you license off to DVLA for any reason, make a copy of it first, so you can prove your entitlement to drive... http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/watchdog/2009/05/dvla_update.html

I can't stand soaps of any kind, they depress me and I can't see the point of watching someone live their fictional lives of stress woe, death, bad marriages, violence etc etc. That's not to say, of course, that I think everyone else should dislike them, my wife for example frequently says, "I'm going to the bedroon now, to watch soaps". She knows I don't like them

I don't We are supposed to be driving to his today to pick the wheels up, me and the man Burns...

Have you joined the Telephone Preference Service? That stops most of the nuisance calls. http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/ Its free, and can be done on line. The front page says... The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is the central opt out register on which you can record your preference not to receive unsolicited sales and marketing telephone calls to your home or mobile telephone numbers. It is a legal requirement that all organisations (including charities, voluntary organisations and political parties) do not make such calls to numbers registered on the TPS unless they have your consent to do so. Organisations with which you have an ongoing relationship, for example those who regard you as a customer, (or in the case of charities - a donor) may well gather your consent during the early stages of your relationship with them and will therefore be entitled to call you even if your number is registered on TPS, unless you have previously told them specifically that you object to them calling you for marketing purposes. The TPS can accept the registration of mobile telephone numbers, however it is important to note that this will prevent the receipt of marketing voice calls but not SMS (text) messages. If you wish to stop receiving SMS marketing messages, please send an 'opt-out' request to the company involved. As TPS registration only prevents marketing calls, organisations will still be able to call you for the purposes of genuine market research.

Easy to all say Brown resign, but what's the alternative?

We used to get sales calls and letters for a specific name on a regular basis at home. This was a new house and we are the only owners/occupiers. They had our address and phone number but not the correct name. We eventually resorted to asking for the name of the Company who was 'phoning, and saying that if they ring again, I will be charging them for my time and inconvenience to the tune of £10 per call. The calls dried up pretty quickly!

I fully understand the "don't speed and you wont get a fine" school of thought, but where the fook does the victim surcharge come into it? Who are the victims that get the extra £15 the speeding motorist gets charged? If speed cameras were not a money making scheme, why was the fine doubled a few years back to £60? Why don't they say no fine, but get six points for example? Surely 2 speeding offences and then a ban would make people think. What happened to the sliding points scale for speeding that was spoken about a while ago. I have 3 points on my licence for 34 in a 30. Same 3 points as I would have got if I was doing 50!

My big bugbear with this is, which victims are going to be paid the £15?
-
Now lets see how we can wring a few more pounds from the motorist... Speeding motorists could be required to pay a £15 surcharge on top of fines as a contribution towards a fund for crime victims. Motorists fined for speeding may have to pay a £15 surcharge towards a fund for crime victims So far the surcharge has been levied only on fines handed down in court. But it was confirmed that Justice Secretary Jack Straw is considering extending it to on-the-spot fines and fixed penalty notices, as well as to other punishments imposed by courts. This could mean millions of motorists, including those caught by speed cameras, having to stump up extra cash on top of the minimum £60 penalty, reported the Daily Telegraph. A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: "The surcharge has, to date, been applied only to fines, at a rate of £15. The Government is considering whether to extend the surcharge to certain types of penalty notices and other court disposals." The Victim's Surcharge was introduced in April 2007 and latest figures show that between April 2008 and January this year it raised more than £6.6 million. That sum could be vastly increased if the surcharge was extended to more than three million drivers handed fixed penalties for speeding each year. Other offences receiving on-the-spot fines include graffiti, shoplifting and being drunk and disorderly. http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21/20090427/tuk-speeding-fine-may-get-15-surcharge-6323e80.html
