chassis rail advice please!!

I need some help here chaps, done plenty of small welding jobs and panel replacements etc but nothing quite on this scale before so i wanna make sure i know exactly what im doing before i start

 

As you can see the o/s rail has had it and been bodge repaired with little patches and god knows what else over the years so I took the decision to drop the x member out to do a propper job.

 

 

 

 

the inner wing side and top is sound BUT the bottom and the engine bay side is cream crackered. i think the only option i got is to make a decent L section plate up the whole length of the chassis rail and butt weld it in after cutting back all the old bottom and side. either i buy a replacement panel (200 sheets) and hack it up or make / have made a replacement plate. does that sound about right? or do i cheat a bit and spot and seam weld a replacement plate over the top of the existing rail (i.e. leave the rail as it is)

take measurements of the section and then get your self to a engineering company and get them to make you a new section up...then chop all the rust out and replace

looks like you'd be best cutting out the old stuff as it looks luike the previous owners have plated over the rust so even if you plate over it, it'll come back, cut out the rust, clean it up, weld in new metal and paint it up, then waxoyl inside the chassis rail.

 

make sure that the rail is well supported while doing this otherwise it could bend.

yeah sounds like a plan to me, its quite a simple bit of metal work so ill find somweher local that can do it (bet it will be a lot less than 200 quid too!). dont think the chassis rail will bend as its got the inner / outer wing on there still that should be more than ridgid enough, im not going to cut much out that isnt there already! just tidy up the edges so they are straght.

What about trying the likes of escort-tec m8, surely they would'nt want that much for a decent rail from a scrapper, just make sure its over-cut out so you can trim it down to fit,

John,just a thought....used one of these metal folders for some time with good results,cost about £48 inc vat,ideal for bending up chassis plates and would save you some money in the long run

good idea, although i hopefully wont have to use it all that often so would prob do better getting one made up locally to me by a fabricator (bound to do a better job of than me as well!)

 

Im going to cut out all the rust over the next couple of evenings with the air cutter and see how much i need. Sent an email to escort-tec regarding the chassis rail.
