Mr Sam Posted May 1, 2007 Report Posted May 1, 2007 on lowering a motor on the cheap.......... basically taking a grinder to the springs got myself some spring compressors so i can dismantle the spare front shocks and clean them up get a coat of paint on them and get them under the arches.......as the ones on the car are shot have been since i bought it
emu Posted May 1, 2007 Report Posted May 1, 2007 Dont cut them, it messes up the spring rate apparently and they dont seat properly in the struts either. Lowering springs are pretty cheap anyway.
Pipster007 Posted May 1, 2007 Report Posted May 1, 2007 A pair of springs for £20 or the risk of dodgy springs...................You work it out Sam
Mr Sam Posted May 1, 2007 Author Report Posted May 1, 2007 naa not going to mate im still not to sure about lowering either...insurance wise
escort new boy Posted May 1, 2007 Report Posted May 1, 2007 well i no someone who has -3inch springs that have been cut down
emu Posted May 1, 2007 Report Posted May 1, 2007 well i no someone who has -3inch springs that have been cut down Doesnt make it right though does it
james p Posted May 1, 2007 Report Posted May 1, 2007 ctut downs are sh~t never sit right and arent stiff enough to hold the car with the lower ride hight
Mr Sam Posted May 1, 2007 Author Report Posted May 1, 2007 god damn it though i want a field car to have a play with
Jay_harrier Posted May 1, 2007 Report Posted May 1, 2007 It's not the best way as the top needs flattening off to sit correctly in the cups, they can be reshaped if you have access to an oxy-acetaline tourch but the temper of the springs is affected. The spring rate won't be affected unless you have progressive rate springs. I've done it before & my brother slammed a MK4 Cortina by 5 inches, its not the best way & people will frown, your choice. Only other thing is you may want to wire them in place, shorter springs can dislodge as the suspension extends, ie off the crest of a hump back bridge.
Pye Man Posted May 2, 2007 Report Posted May 2, 2007 naa not going to mate im still not to sure about lowering either...insurance wise Wouldnt make too much difference to the insurance if you lowered your car I dont think. Try doing a daft online quote through someone like HIC. They were pretty good wif me when I was your age (god feel like an old man ) Worth a try anyway mate.
Wessie Posted May 2, 2007 Report Posted May 2, 2007 i've seen some big crashes on the track caused by springs breaking/falling out etc after being messed around with
CéDriC Posted May 2, 2007 Report Posted May 2, 2007 or bought a second set of front dampers with shortened spring you fit for the strip... And you can lock up the rear beam by clamping the rear one to avoid the lowering effect under acceleration.
Stu_B Posted May 2, 2007 Report Posted May 2, 2007 I've jus picked up a rover 414 with koni adjustables on the back & cut springs on the front - first thing I'm doing is changin to proper lowering springs!!
johnny_h Posted May 2, 2007 Report Posted May 2, 2007 I'm cutting mine then welding them to the cups. It's free! If you don't hear from me after the weekend you'll know not to try it yourself.
Cookie Posted May 2, 2007 Report Posted May 2, 2007 I'm cutting mine then welding them to the cups. It's free! If you don't hear from me after the weekend you'll know not to try it yourself. Sam, your very own crash test dummy! Sorry m8
Burns Posted May 2, 2007 Report Posted May 2, 2007 out of curiosity, would mk2 springs fit onto a mk1 fezza?
Mr Sam Posted May 2, 2007 Author Report Posted May 2, 2007 yes they do only difference is the top cups on the front of the mk2's theys got more mounting bolts or summin apparently if you fit lowering springs up front on the lower models they go about an extra 15mm than there sposed to as XR shocks are allready 15mm lower than the base model shocks
Doc Posted May 2, 2007 Report Posted May 2, 2007 Mate i saw Chip foose do it on overhauling ! Do it !
lee_capri Posted May 2, 2007 Report Posted May 2, 2007 im sure you can still buy them lowering clamp kits for about a fiver from any-good parts shop but weater they are any good i dont no! i once cut the springs and took more off of one than the other that was on a fiesta had to go buy new set in the end good luck with that
