rob-loves-osf Posted May 18, 2007 Report Posted May 18, 2007 yeah but DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN coz if you do you wont get any oil pressure and well need i say more my grandads doing work on a 1600 laser with a seized engine coz some idiot had over tightened the tappets! if you want the setting goto either haynes or autodata mate or even esier goto a garage and get it done ! far easier and that way you have re-asurance that it cant knack ure engine ive done it n im 15 with only 1 level nvq and done my tappets on my 950 mk1 fezza so really its teens play lol have a go mate its easy as long as you know the setting rob
GT_Jim Posted May 18, 2007 Report Posted May 18, 2007 its not too bad you will pick it up pretty quickly like escort 21 said work the rule of 9 - dont forget to take your spark plugs off as its a pain to turn the engine when its compressing

Overtightening them is certainly undesirable as your valves will not fully close, this will give you loss of compression and possible burning of the exhaust valve seats. I can't see it affecting oil pressure though, care to explain?
Rick Posted May 18, 2007 Author Report Posted May 18, 2007 cant find it in the haynes manuals. load of crud im just gonna have a go i have a rought idea
Admin Vista Posted May 18, 2007 Admin Report Posted May 18, 2007 It's bound to be in the Haynes manual as it's a major maintenance item. Look for valve clearances in the index (as opposed to tappets)
Mr Sam Posted May 18, 2007 Report Posted May 18, 2007 i use the 5 method treat the first 2 cylinders as a pair and the second 2 as a pair working on the first 2 you need your valves to add up to 5 so if you want to adjust number 1 you want number 4 rocking, if your doing number 2 you want number 3 rocking then do the second 2 cylinders and treat valve 5 as 1 again very confusing if youve never done it before but once youve been playing for a while you'll be doing it in your sleep remember todo them when the engines cold
ever88 Posted May 18, 2007 Report Posted May 18, 2007 you head has 8 valves numbered 1 to 8 from front of engine to back. turn crank until valve 1 is down (fully open) and adjust valve 8 clearance. this is what the guy's are telling you. the sum adds to 9. i.e when valve 2 is down adjust valve 7. the sum of both still equals 9 your clearances will be different from exhaust to inlet so be sure you keep your eye on which you are adjusting. hope this helps
escort21 Posted May 18, 2007 Report Posted May 18, 2007 The 5 method is shit compared to the more accurate rule of 9
emu Posted May 18, 2007 Report Posted May 18, 2007 If its a crossflow then cant you just do them 'on the rock'?? Turn the engine until you get to the point where number 1 cylinder exhaust valve is closing and the inlet is opening (rocking). Adjust cylinder 4's valves. Turn the engine till cylinder 2's valves are rocking.Adjust number 3. 3 rocking, adjust 2 4 rocking, adjust 1.

Onyx Dave Posted May 18, 2007 Report Posted May 18, 2007 If the engine is standard the rocking rule is ok but if you have a cam in your engine use the rule of 9 as is more of a true reading. Dont forget that if you have a performance cam fitted the clearances will be different from a standard engine. If you set a performance cammed engine using standard clearances you will cause damage to your engine
eskimo Posted May 19, 2007 Report Posted May 19, 2007 it makes sense now thanks il give it a bash tomoz (not with a hammer) Good, as soon as thats done, there's a v12 jag out back that need it's valve clearances done. Sorry, Just takin the piss. Good to see a forum with so much help available.
X-pack-Glyn Posted May 19, 2007 Report Posted May 19, 2007 listen to you crossflow lot on a pinto its easy, turn the lobe straight up and adjust accordingly... oh, and it takes me 3 mins to adjust my cam timing on the vernier, how long on a crossflow, 3 hours!!!
Onyx Dave Posted May 19, 2007 Report Posted May 19, 2007 Yes Glyn, if you know what your doing you never have to adjust your cam timing again on a x/flow after building it, thats why most people use offset timing pegs! But if you change your cambelt you have to adjust it again and as the belt always stretches as it gets older your timing is never spot on our x/flows stay true
