Admin Vista Posted May 24, 2007 Admin Report Posted May 24, 2007 Whilst that was a yawn tastic read I do in fact support much of the case against the 4 x 4. (though not from an emissions perspective) If you need them for off road use then fair do's but most of them are just enormous Chelsea tractors that take up twice the space of the rest of us to do the school / shopping run. Plus can you imagine being hit by one? Why do the rich tossers need a 50 grand 3 ton range rover to drive around in on his own when there are plenty of cars of equal prestige and luxury available?
Slik 50 Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 LMFAO have you read the comments on the bottom of the page Thats not an Anglia. It's a convertible Triumph Herald. Posted by: Trev | April 24, 2007 7:27 AM You know, I think you might be right. Well done Trev. Bugger. Posted by: graham | April 24, 2007 9:42 AM What do you mean he might be right? He is fookin right you smelly hippy Im not a lover of 4X4 either but only because I cant see around them when Im stuck in traffic. Other than that they dont bother me at all

Vista... It was proven a while ago that a person being hit at only 12 MPH in a 4x4 can result in horrific injuries to threaten/take their life... 12MPH!!!! *edit* have just read my reply, and it sounds like I am questioning you mate... But i'm not LOL
Slik 50 Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 I understand they may ba a little more "Hard hitting" than "normall" cars but you cant go around banning cars that are any bigger than say an escort ! I would'nt personally like to be hit be a 4X4 but I also would'nt like to be hit by a transit or a bus either
Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 Good point Slik. I am going to stay out of this, because I hate 4x4's personally. They are bought for the wives of blokes who go to work and want their wife and ONE saucepan to be safe. The trouble is, the wife has only been driving a little Fizz-pop or Mini-Metro, so she can't drive, manouvre or park a sodding great 4x4. Also, it is seen as a status symbol by most people... WHY??? I am not a Greenpeece hippy either because I know a couple of people who own 4x4's. They are both blokes, one uses his to tow his boat, and the other uses his to tow trailers with cars on and other random tott LOL. What ever happened to the estate car... that's what my mum and dad owned for 11 years while me and my sister were growing up As I said, I am staying out of it LOL
Admin Vista Posted May 24, 2007 Admin Report Posted May 24, 2007 I understand they may ba a little more "Hard hitting" than "normall" cars but you cant go around banning cars that are any bigger than say an escort ! I would'nt personally like to be hit be a 4X4 but I also would'nt like to be hit by a transit or a bus either I'm not suggesting they be banned, as just like vans there are people who genuinely need that kind of vehicle for occupational reasons. I would however like to see them much more heavily taxed when owned by people who don't need them for those reasons though For instance at the Post Office counter Case 1 Farmer strolls up to tax his muddy 4 x 4 and pays a normal rate Case 2 Chelsea tractor owner strolls in having needed a stepladder to get down as she's only 5'2" and a cushion to see over the steering wheel. And gets hit with a frosty look from the Post Office Matron and a bill of £2000 I reckon that'd dampen peoples enthusiasm for uneccessarily large vehicles.
Slik 50 Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 Agreed mate but again how do you controll it what if Didnt need one but had one anyway for one day a year I could go out thrash it around a feild, put on me wellies and flat cap, stick a piece of straw in me mouth, put a bit of blushon me cheeks then go to tax the thing, I would look like a farmer so would I qualify or could I just tax it on line and not bother going to the post office! What about the other cars like lambo's, ferrari's, dodge chargers ect that are also "Gas gusselers" do they get taxed in the same bracket aswell?

It's not the gas guzzling that bothers me mate it's the physical size of them when it's completely unneccesary in most cases of ownership. As for the differing tax rates, I doubt that would be too difficult to police. Farmers must already have to produce some sort of documentation that entitles them to buy red diesel for their Farm machinery, apply the same rules.
Twinkle Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 my range rover fits in the same size space as my volvo
Admin Vista Posted May 24, 2007 Admin Report Posted May 24, 2007 my range rover fits in the same size space as my volvo Now compare the weights and momentum of the two cars in an accident.
Twinkle Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 my range rover fits in the same size space as my volvo Now compare the weights and momentum of the two cars in an accident. but all cars are different so you cant really compare, sounds like you want everyone driving around in ikkle ford ka's if we are talking weights and momentum being a big factor its called personal choice and unfortunatly everyone seems to be against that nowadays
Admin Vista Posted May 24, 2007 Admin Report Posted May 24, 2007 I'm not against personal choice mate, but common sense gets my vote in spades.
Twinkle Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 common sense gets my vote too, thats why i have a nice big strong vehicle that can cope with any terrain and cope with inclement weather as well as having a great driving position with good vision, it is also comfy and cheap to maintain and repair at home unlike a lot of cars, parts are readily available and just like OSF's there is a huge fan base out there of dedicated followers and enthusiats

Slik 50 Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 I cant belive you are talking about common sense when we all drive old fords
Admin Vista Posted May 24, 2007 Admin Report Posted May 24, 2007 I cant belive you are talking about common sense when we all drive old fords Actually I thinking driving, enjoying and maintaining a classic vehicle that is appreciating in value and in many cases is tax exempt makes perfect sense. It beats suffering the crippling depreciation I went through on my last two modern cars.
Mr.Sumo Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 what ever the arguments for or against 4x4"s , valid or otherwise , surely its up to the individual person to decide what they drive ... as for me , i couldn"t give 2 sh*ts about carbon this or emmisions that ...i will drive what i want . Its my money , and if i decide to buy a 4x4 because i can get my 3 kids , wife , dog etc etc in more comfotably than a " normal " saloon or estate , i damn well will . Rant over As for the original thread title ( sorry Wessie ) , the Gaurdian reading , 2CV driving , sandle wearing tree hugging pr*ck should get his facts right before he starts slagging cars etc off ! tinker lol !

Rant over Be my guest, I too have a right to do as I please. So I therefore look forward to the opportunity to vote for higher taxation of inconsiderate road users buying needlessly large and dangerous (to others) vehicles TBH I rate 4 x 4 drivers as far worse than the BMW drivers that are generally rubbished on here. None of them get out in front of me regardless of how big they are, lets see who cares more about their paint job, me in my ageing 406 or the 4 x 4 driver in their expensive waste of space.

Seems to me that your distain for 4x4 etc is personal...and as for getting out in front of you because they drive a 4x4 and you don"t seems rather petty....i can"t see how you can class an inanimate object as a waste of space ..........a car is a car , and a crash is a crash whatever way you look at it . Hitting a 4x4 because he wants to go into your particular part of the road because of what he is driving....you should get a grip Vista . Its only a car after all .

Hitting a 4x4 because he wants to go into your particular part of the road because of what he is driving....you should get a grip Vista . Its only a car after all . I meant a waste of space literally, as in taking up too much space. Plus it's not getting out in front of me that irritates me, I let people out all the time in traffic. It's pushing out in front of people with the assumption that because you drive something bigger you automatically have right of way and that people will let you get away with it for fear of coming off worse. Well guess what, I don't suscribe to that school of thought and if you try to muscle me out the way you will cause an accident. I rate 4 x 4 drivers badly because in general they do seem to think it acceptable to demonstrate those kind of poor and inconsiderate road manners. Staying with the subject of 4 x 4's give me one good reason why they shouldn't pay a higher rate of taxation than regular vehicles? Here are my reasons why they should: - 1) They take up more space 2) They are more dangerous to others 3) They are significantly heavier and therefore cause more wear and tear to the road network 4) They use significantly more fuel, now I don't give a stuff about CO2 emmisions or any of that green peace rubbish, but fuel is a finite commodity and it's price is driven by demand, ergo the more Chelsea tractors there are drinking what fuel is available the higher the price goes for the rest of us that can't afford such enormous and expensive vehicles. Do you think the man that drives a 50 grand Range Rover that does 12 mpg gives a stuff that he's paying £5 a gallon? No I bet he doesn't, but it affects the likes of you and me drastically. Plus bear in mind that motorcycles have paid different duty rates according to their size for years. You don't hear the owners of 1000cc sports bikes complaining that they can't tax their bikes for the same amount as the owner of a 125cc commuter do you? And hey it wasn't me that started the rant.
Mr.Sumo Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 i know , it was me that started the rant........ love a good debate
