can`t stretch to an atlas axle just yet. can anyone tell me of any cheapish upgrades i can make to my english axle to take descent bhp.... cheers davy

Yeah.. get an Atlas ..

sorry but if you want a strong axle thats your choice.

You can upgrade the shafts .. 400

Go to atlas shafts in the english casing 600

then the CWP will start spitting teeth .. loads and loads and loads of money because there are no upgrades ..

Its a tiny cwp and thats why its weak, and then you after market ratios that further weaken them, with less teeth on the pinion so that only 1 tooth take the load instead of 3

That said if your running hoooge power and skinny wheels you'll never get the wheels to grip enough to break anything .. get some grip and things will go bang

what bhp you talking ?

not talking huge numbers, will be running about 200 bhp(celica turbo engine) but hoping to get a bit more thru time, got a slipper fitted and want to run 10in steels so think grip might be a problem hense was trying to make my axle a bit stronger cheers davy

Stick with the Anglia axle.. they are mighty strong little things.

If you break it then upgrade it.

Pointless spending a load of money on something that might happen.

the best upgrade for an english is to fit 2 piece 16 spline quaffie shafts and a big bearing quaffie A.T.B. diff to match ( £800 brand new for the lot ) . If running atmo gearing 3:9 , 4:1 , 4:4 etc ratios then these are stronger than the 3:7 , 3:5 etc ratios that the turbo cars run as the teeth are bigger . Atlas axles are big money , budget for at least £2000 for a shortened , rebuilt one with the proper L.S.D. ratio you want  .......

In my opinion, these are crap. How do i know? I have f@@ked several with a 160bhp 120lb/ft X-Flow. I now run standard and not had a problem

Ahh wisdom again ...

take a 2.8 to 1 first gear and a 200ft/lb

200 x 2.8 = 560 x final drive 4.4:1 = 2,464 ft/lb of torque

200 x 2.8 = 560 x final drive 3.5:1 = 1,960 ft/lb of torque

So the higher the ratio (numerically) the more likely to break something

34 divided by 9 = 3.77

40 divided by 9 = 4.44

so the " atmo ratio " has smaller teeth as it has more of them on the same size crown wheel

So Gaz is wrong but right in a way about the teeth being less likley to break as the higher the number of teeth allthough smaller tend to have more in mesh .. hence sharing the load , but then because of the ratio it tends to cancel that out as it creates more torque.

confused.. you will be.

The best advice.. From Neil .. use something till it breaks then upgrade

So as i already said  , the 4:4 , 4:1 + 3:9 diffs are stronger than the 3:5 and 3:7 ones . Take no notice of scientific formulas as these are usually bollox  and take notice of real life events instead . So you've got 3 choices = run standard small 22 spline shafts , run big 16 spline 2 piece uprated shafts with bigger diff bearings so they fit or buy a £2000+ full monty shortened atlas that weighs a ton  . Decisions , decisions
