Mr.Sumo Posted August 9, 2007 Report Posted August 9, 2007 can i put a grinder to my bumpers and take off the chrome or should i seek professional help doing it ? Anyone got any opinions ?
Fiesta Steve Posted August 9, 2007 Report Posted August 9, 2007 A grinder will fook em. I did Fezza's for him using 40 grit on a DA sander. Removed the chrome without damaging the metal.
V8ian Posted August 9, 2007 Report Posted August 9, 2007 Generally its better to have the chrome either chemically stripped or reverse electrolysis I think pickiling acid used by plumbers removes chrome, But it is far cheaper to have them stripped, may seem expensive at the time, but after you have ground off the chrome, the bumbers will have to be pollished before copper plating, polished again, then Nickel plating and finally chromed, that is if they are done correctly, Shame really,my mate has just retired from a hard chroming shop, he was GOOD Ian

sarkie83 Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 i tired electrolysis - worked really well - beats wire brushes! http://www.sarkiesparkingspace.co.uk/electrolysis.asp
914Driver Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 I narrowed the bumpers on a 1979 Chevy Malibu by cutting 2" out of the center. This brought the outer tips closer to the body, but at the same time I removed all that safety nonsense behind the chrome that makes it so heavy. Once cut in half it was a managable length, so I stuck it in a sand blaster. I couldn't remove the chrome, but I did pecker it up a bit to give it some tooth for paint to stick to. After it was welded back together and on the car I painted it with House of Kolor's "Adhereto". This makes anything stick to anything. The bumpers were painted the same color as the body, no problems with flaking, peeling or anything. Dan http://www.houseofkolor.com/products/specialty.jsp
