cossieglen Posted August 19, 2007 Report Posted August 19, 2007 2.1 with a Harris head and cosworth bottom end Well I'm a bit biased as that's what I'm building, but Ron Harris assures me it's going to be good for 180-190bhp and 8,250rpm
GJUK Posted August 19, 2007 Report Posted August 19, 2007 2.1 with a Harris head and cosworth bottom end Well I'm a bit biased as that's what I'm building, but Ron Harris assures me it's going to be good for 180-190bhp and 8,250rpm Slightly off topic but what does something like this cost to buy please? Cheers Jon
BIG G Posted August 19, 2007 Author Report Posted August 19, 2007 soz ian get your drift now. Well done paul
cossieglen Posted August 19, 2007 Report Posted August 19, 2007 2.1 with a Harris head and cosworth bottom end Well I'm a bit biased as that's what I'm building, but Ron Harris assures me it's going to be good for 180-190bhp and 8,250rpm Slightly off topic but what does something like this cost to buy please? Cheers Jon All told, including everything, (Pistons, cam, head, rods, crank, block, clutch, flywheel, exhaust) it's costing me in the region of £3000, building the engine myself just buying the bits. It could cost more, it could cost less, all depends on what parts you buy for it really, and one factor is how much you get the crank and rods for, and the block etc, as these will come second hand. If you want to know more mate, feel free to PM me. Sorry for the quick hijack BIG G.
GJUK Posted August 19, 2007 Report Posted August 19, 2007 Thanks mate, (you may all continue on topic now lol) Jon
Admin Vista Posted August 20, 2007 Admin Report Posted August 20, 2007 2.2 gets my vote, you get a whole lot more grunt for your efforts and it comes much easier. Who wants to rev to 8000 rpm with all the extra stress that it puts on the engine when you can get it at 6000rpm? I get around 190bhp at 6000 rpm with my set up. It'd produce a lot more with a cam change and running on 50's, but I've got what I need so I'm happy.
Admin Mk2Jo Posted August 20, 2007 Admin Report Posted August 20, 2007 Good Luck Mr G ...... reckon you should go for the 2.2
BIG G Posted August 20, 2007 Author Report Posted August 20, 2007 just got to get some rods now........fiesta i thinks
Admin Vista Posted August 20, 2007 Admin Report Posted August 20, 2007 just got to get some rods now........fiesta i thinks Thems the ones, Fiesta or mk 3 escort as long as it's the 1.6D NA engine. Here's some I prepared earlier Unfortunately these ones aren't available as they're doing the business in my motor
BIG G Posted August 21, 2007 Author Report Posted August 21, 2007 cheers vista there the ones are all fiesta diesels 1.6
BIG G Posted August 21, 2007 Author Report Posted August 21, 2007 sam or anyone is there a way of tellin the different fiesta diesel engines apart from boot badges
Admin Vista Posted August 21, 2007 Admin Report Posted August 21, 2007 cheers vista there the ones are all fiesta diesels 1.6 All diesel mk2 Fiestas and Mk3 escorts were fitted with a 1.6Diesel engine. These are the ones to look out for and they're attracting a premium, I think mine cost me about £100. Want me to look out for a set for you? The later ones that Sam mentions are no good
BIG G Posted August 21, 2007 Author Report Posted August 21, 2007 Cheers vista i have got a massive scrappy here give me an excuse to get up there but after the wedding as been banned from gettin dirty finger nails but if you find any thats would be great
cossieglen Posted August 21, 2007 Report Posted August 21, 2007 I only paid £130 for my forged steel Cossie rods, for the little bit extra it might be worth looking out for set of those? I got mine on ebay. Only difference is that the rod length is slightly longer however, so this will probably mean different pistons. I bought forged ones myself anyway, due to the compression I'm going to be running, and the revs.

The reason for using the diesel rods isn't just strength, it's because the big end journal they need is smaller ( X- flow size) this allows offset grinding of the crank for a longer stroke and therefore more cubes oh and compression wise diesel rods can handle pretty much anything, compression ignition engine after all.
cossieglen Posted August 22, 2007 Report Posted August 22, 2007 Ah I see, I didn't realise they were going for a stroked lump, just bored to 2.1 or something. Yes the big end journal size is the same I believe, but I have a cosworth crank too so isn't actually a factor for me, I'll just be getting that ground -0.025" and the block bored +0.090" to give me 2.1L. Yeah the fiesta diesel rods are good, I used to run some in my old pinto years ago, but I don't think they were the 1.6 ones as I didn't have to have them modified to fit. The only limiting factor really is out and out revs I suppose, but will probably still be good for 7000-7250rpm? I used to rev mine to that anyway, and it didn't blow up on me I've gone for the cosworth bottom end for its strength and reliability at higher revs, as I'll be taking my new engine to 8250rpm
