Mick The Cabbie Posted September 4, 2007 Report Posted September 4, 2007 CF & RF are pretty much the only two mags I ever usually buy. Sure there were others in years gone by when they featured interesting cars. Remember early issues of Fast car, Fast Ford, Hot car(became Performance car) amongst some others? I sometimes bought car 5 mags a month 10-15 years ago.. This evening, I made a random purchase of Practical performance car mag. (Probably only the third copy I've ever bought and I imagine, the last!) It was sealed up in a bag with a free supplement. The cover with it's 650BHP Volvo Amazon estate and finally finished 27litre tank engined SD1 Rover amongst others inspired the buy. So there I am sitting at home flicking through the pages with varying interest. A mixed bag of both old and modern modified classics. The Volvo rocks! There's an unreal 570BHP + 630lbs/ft V8 twin turbo'd E30 Beeamer race car. One of the staff cars is a long time owned and featured Mustang engined yellow Mk1 Capri. I then reach page 124, "HIT, MISS OR MAYBE section- PPC's view of the petrolhead planet. Tell us what you think we should change by e-mailing will@ppcmag.co.uk." I guess this is a regular and mostly unchanged page which is repeated month by month... So of course like all of us on ere would, I scroll straight down to the line which says Escort Mk1/2. Quote, For: So fun, so tunable, so tail-happy. Against: Naff 'old skool' scene. Sum up: The worlds favourite competition car. Now if I'd ave read this in some mag which fearures modern FWD shopping trolleys dressed up to look like spaceships, I'd ave laughed it off! However it's printed in a magazine that although not specifically Ford orientated, does in essence does touch on our hobby. So I do actually feel a little offended by this comment . I think Will's inbox needs to be annoyingly filled with members views on this matter!!!
surfingturnip Posted September 4, 2007 Report Posted September 4, 2007 theres been a few threads on this already not long since mate.
mk2 stu Posted September 4, 2007 Report Posted September 4, 2007 yer this has been mentioned, think an apology is owed!
bomber1 Posted September 4, 2007 Report Posted September 4, 2007 think that capri was up the ace on saturday. does it have 3door cossie rims by any chance?
Mick The Cabbie Posted September 4, 2007 Author Report Posted September 4, 2007 theres been a few threads on this already not long since mate. Wooops, yeh I see the very same subject was raised yesterday. That'll teach me to not pay attention
Copey Posted September 4, 2007 Report Posted September 4, 2007 'Practical' performance car...WTF IS PRACTICAL ABOUT A TANK ENGINE!!!!
Guest MK1gaz Posted September 4, 2007 Report Posted September 4, 2007 'Practical' performance car...WTF IS PRACTICAL ABOUT A TANK ENGINE!!!!And what's it handle like = oil tanker
Admin Mk2Jo Posted September 5, 2007 Admin Report Posted September 5, 2007 I am quite happy being "naff"
Mrp Posted September 5, 2007 Report Posted September 5, 2007 'Practical' performance car...WTF IS PRACTICAL ABOUT A TANK ENGINE!!!!And what's it handle like = oil tanker Its been built for strait line on the salt flats. So it doesnt need to handle, much like lots of drag cars that would drive like a barn door on the road. It is a quality mag with lots of interesting well built cars that arent the run of the mill, projects that dont conform to a narrow minded view on tuning. As for the 'Naff oldskool scene' I think there are aspects that are, and its not just old fords going through it jap stuff and old vauxhalls are seeing a masive groth in popularity too. Everyone has their own preferances and im sure that there has been plenty of remarks on here as well as in ford mags about Jap Crap boy racers and their plastic cars shitroen paxos novas and the like. Its a big wide world out there if you dont like the mag its simple dont buy it!!
petrolhead Posted September 5, 2007 Report Posted September 5, 2007 I've got to agree that it is a quality car mag, the best out there in my opinion. 'Naff Old Skool Scene'? My skin is thicker than that, I find it amusing more than annoying.
c1arke Posted September 5, 2007 Report Posted September 5, 2007 ye i agree and yes i no i want complain yesterday but forget about it we dont want to turn out like the US complain about everything and sewing people

We all know they're wrong so who cares what they say?
Copey Posted September 5, 2007 Report Posted September 5, 2007 i think my comment was perfectly fine, its practicle performence, and i dont really think a tank engine is practicle...best its bloody expensive too
Popuptoaster Posted September 5, 2007 Report Posted September 5, 2007 There are people in the "old skool" scene who are a bit anal about stuff, same as there are in the RS owners club or probably any group has those who take it all way to seriously, its not that important, why worry? If someone says your naff and it bothers you, your probably one of the ones taking it all too seriously!
OllieC Posted September 5, 2007 Report Posted September 5, 2007 virtually everyone i know says my capri is a joke anyway, i have developed a thick skin id have thought a serious against for escorts would be sky high prices for decent cars ? at least compared to other OSF's anyway
Guest MK1gaz Posted September 5, 2007 Report Posted September 5, 2007 Practical Performance car mag ain't bad really , they've got a few hair-brained project cars but mean well . There's a bit too much V8 love though ( bigger is best ) but they forget to mention the 5 mpg , oil tanker handling + the overheating everytime they sit in traffic .
bortaf Posted September 5, 2007 Report Posted September 5, 2007 Perhaps the "naff" quote was cos they knew there would be loads of old skool geezers up in arms at such a quote, perhaps some people take it all to seriousely
shortie Posted September 5, 2007 Report Posted September 5, 2007 one comment has worked for them tho, albeit a bad comment but what has it achieved? us talking about their magazine!! if someone demanded an apology and they agree, what will happen? more people will buy the mag to see if an apology is published, thus pushing up their sales figures. Crafty sales strategy!!
stu Posted September 5, 2007 Report Posted September 5, 2007 i think the mag is shit myself find it steers away from the evry day joe 2 much. but thats just my apinuion. lets face it that coment was made delibrately 2 do just this their all laughing at r expence. chill out evry 1............... but im thinking bout going up their office 2 moz with bats 4 mindless vilonce if any1 fanceys it
Popuptoaster Posted September 5, 2007 Report Posted September 5, 2007 My V8 does 25mpg, dont overheat in traffic and weighs less than a pinto, and it sounds mucho better.

MattJ Posted September 5, 2007 Report Posted September 5, 2007 PPC has suffered the same way as all the mags do and that is they have to move to the market. Anyone remeber the first few editions of 'Revs' with the Mk1 Golfs, Mk2 Escorts, etc.? Look at it now. Like i said in the previous posts, if you don't like it, vote with your feet and don't buy it. At least we have CF and RF to fall back on......Don't change it boys!
Mick The Cabbie Posted September 6, 2007 Author Report Posted September 6, 2007 Looks like I opened a can of worms here. One which was previously locked closed after a 7 page argument. It seems that PPC have some sour grapes and feels the need to voice them in their publication. Just to say, that my earlier statement of being left feeling 'offended' by PPC's comment was maybe a little strong. 'Suprised' probably being the more appropriate word. It's each to their own I guess. If we all had the same opinions and likes/ dislikes on everything. The world be a boring place! UP THE OSF POSSE!
Guest MK1gaz Posted September 6, 2007 Report Posted September 6, 2007 My V8 does 25mpg, dont overheat in traffic and weighs less than a pinto, and it sounds mucho better. Your rover V8 doesn't do 25 to the gallon , it weighs more than a pinto and goes like an old donkey more like

Very true mate but classic fords are better without V8's UNLESS it's a proper tubed chassis pro-street drag car or a custom car with hand made everything if you get my drift . Proper custom cars/rods are useless for getting sideways down the trading estate though !!!!!!
