fezza Posted September 16, 2007 Author Report Posted September 16, 2007 Ahh Cookie beat me to it right so etch primer over bare metal, then normal primer before paint Cheers fellas
Rick Posted September 16, 2007 Report Posted September 16, 2007 2k etch is the finest thing you can put on bare metal
jimbo Posted September 16, 2007 Report Posted September 16, 2007 Am I right in thinking that etch primer is porous, so that if you let the weather get to it, it lets moisture through to the metal and starts the rot? Just wondering if I can get away with restoring my bodywork in stages, or whether I need to shelter it and do it in one go?
Gonzo Posted September 16, 2007 Report Posted September 16, 2007 I've got a feeling it is, yes. I painted my 125 exhaust with it and had to strip and repaint it again after a few months...
alladdin Posted September 16, 2007 Report Posted September 16, 2007 i beleive all primers are porous?
john_3.0s Posted September 16, 2007 Report Posted September 16, 2007 i beleive all primers are porous? think your right mate, primer out in the rain aint a good idea
Rick Posted September 16, 2007 Report Posted September 16, 2007 yeah, its not gonna rot away or anything like that but youl get surface rust form after a few weeks in the elements
DeanMk1Capri Posted September 16, 2007 Report Posted September 16, 2007 A company called 'All Paints' in Epsom sell a primer called RED BROWN (needs to be mixed with a hardener) which once applied is totally waterproof and it looks just like RED OXIDE PRIMER. Can be brushed onto bare metal and/or body filler. Superb product
fezza Posted September 16, 2007 Author Report Posted September 16, 2007 Going to be doing my engine bay in stages so fingers crossed i wont have too much trouble
Mr Sam Posted September 16, 2007 Report Posted September 16, 2007 i beleive all primers are porous? think your right mate, primer out in the rain aint a good idea i thought they were aswell
Durham Fiesta Posted September 16, 2007 Report Posted September 16, 2007 thought all primers had to be porous as thats what helped the top coat adhere to it
bronze4door Posted September 16, 2007 Report Posted September 16, 2007 i used zinc182 primer on one of the doors on my escort and it has been like that for months and has not bubbled or has any sine of rust on it whatsoever
Tom Posted September 16, 2007 Report Posted September 16, 2007 zinc primer is usually applied to metal that is going to be welded
