Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 Ahhhhhh, aprenticships, that takes me back!!! I started my apprenticship in Panel Beating/Spraying when I was 18. It was for a firm in London aprox 15 miles from where Jimbob lives. (In the mountains) I used to sit in traffic to and from, and it took me nearly 2 hours to travel one way! I had a little Mini-Metro which I filled up once a week for £20. You are probably thinking, why is he banging on, well, I only got paid £63 a week! I hope you don't work for a firm that will take the piss, congratulations on your results & I wish you all the best getting the job you want!!!

mk3tina Posted September 1, 2006 Report Posted September 1, 2006 you are absolutely right, it is another word for slave labour, im in my final few months of my apprenticeship now, i get £90 a week plus £10 travel expense money, its not all that bad, and it keeps me being able to buy parts for the capri

V8ian Posted September 1, 2006 Report Posted September 1, 2006 Just in case people are unaware, there is NO minimum wage for trainees or apprentices, the minimum wage bit only applies for this group when they reach the age of 26, My son got caught on this , 2 years ago when he started his electrical apprenticeship he was paid £1.70 an hour!!! He complained and was told "Well you know how hard appreticeships are to get dont you, There are plenty more kids that will take your place" he lasted a year before he chucked it in, I think he regrets chucking it in now, as he is in a job he hates, On the other hand my Daughter has just got a place in a dental teaching hospital to become a dental nurse, pays £18.5k just to train!!! Starting money was crap but but the qualifications i got opened a lot of doors! Thing is you may wanna broaded your horizions to a few more engineering practices! Not just Motor's!
