R/C Advice Please

Been thinking of investing in an R/C car for a while now but know cack all about them, so if anyone on here can offer some advice I would be greatfull.

I'm after an "oldskool" looking car, does'nt neccessarily have to be a Ford (but I would prefer one) it wont be used for competition or anything, just a bit of fun until I get my real car fixed.

So, some questions for you.

1) How much should I be looking at spending?

2) Do I need to use the "proper" fuel tpye ones or just stick with battery powered?

3) Any "kit" reccomendations you have or should I get the ones already built?

 

Can't think of anything else, but if you know of something I should be looking for all advice would be greatlly appreciated.

do u want an off road or car if u want a car u need a very flat surface 2 use it on!!

u can get oldskool looking car bodys for any 1/10 car or truck as long as it is one of the bigger companies (hpi, tamiya, traxxas... ) there is a 1/8th scale mk1 escort body that come up on ebay there are also 1/5th scale capri's no and again.

1) electric at least 100 for a good quality car, nitro 1/10 £250 or more 1/8 £300+ depending what u want, petrol £500 and up

2) if u are willing to spend the money on a decent nitro car its well worth it but the cheap 1's spend more time apart on a bench because u cant get them 2 run right. (nitro have 2 be run in for a few tanks but will last longer as they only have batteries for radio gear so fuel and go for a few hours electric have short battery life 20mins ish)

3) if u want a nitro i would advise a traxxas revo, tmax or jato they are reliable lil cars i have a revo and it goes like stink and always runs reliably also has a reverse as standard which is a great bonus also takes all hpi 1/8 bodies

i have the revo 3.3 and its fookin awesome, bloody quick, great for jumps and tough as nails, much, much quicker than the savage eh mike

everyone told me nitro ones are horendous but ive had a mgt 1/8 nitro truck for a couple of years and goes like stink. battrey powerd ones are good to just depends on budget and space to use them

petrol ones are alot better than batt and with the body.....thats not a problem at all

i could go on all day but id depends what you want.

 

but, if your flush push the boat out and get a propper petrol (not them nasty nitro glow fuel things, this is REAL petrol) FG marder/monster/tourer. il get escort 21 to put some pics up.

 

An FG used sensibly will last you years and years and wont go wrong time after time like nitros do.

 

i had a mate that spent 30k, yes 30 grand on one seasons racing of 1/8th nitro rallycross, i think he used 14 engines up.

 

i raced my marder one season and all it cost was the fuel in the tank!

oh, and my marder wiped the floor with his nitro buggy, and when it conked out i repeadedly drove over it with the marder

i know im massive.....

 

thats one of my old race chassis, never raced it with the capri shell, used a honda and a old skool BMW CSL for that.

 

that chassis did a seasons racing and appart from new tyres its still mint!

 

the chassis has an LSD, discs all round,carbon and alloy extras, tuned pipe and a K&N.

Hear what your saying Glynn but its only for dicking about with, if I remember right were'nt you selling one of your big Capri R/C for about a grand........that sort of money goes on my big car mate. Looks fantastic though.

 

I spose I want something dead easy and simple to use that is'nt going to break down between £100-£200.

I remember a few years ago, think it was Tamiya brought out a Mini RC and that looked smart.

How much are the Marder one's then, at least I could get an Escort shell and there not too big at about 400mm long.

Are they any good then?, keep the info coming fella's as I do appreciate it and I'd rather listen to you lot rather than a fella in a shop who just wants me to part with my cash

Marders are petrol mate and fooking hooge....

 

the only old skool shell for those is the old shape mini.

 

i will sell the capri at the right price, but i got carried away with modding it, its cost me 1800.

 

the marders up for sale at 500 ish.

 

if you get a nitro for 200 which is within reach il garuntee you you will spend that again on broken pull starts every month (about 25 quid a go) then you got your nitro (last time i brought this it was about 12 quid for half a litre, a petrol will run all day on £3.00), the clutches dont last 5 mins on nitros...i think you can see where this is going, in other words after a year that nitro has cost the same amount as a decent petrol car.

 

if you want something fun for dicking about with get an ellectric and a few 3000 batteries and a fast charger, despite people thinking ellectrics are slower i had a brushless motored tamiya mini that was gunned at 68 mph, it used to shed the tyres off the rims, way faster than most standard out the box nitros though.

I bought a Tamiya TT-01 kit off ebay about 2 years back. It was about £60, but i think you can get em cheaper now. You have to build it yourself of course, and the parts are barely adequete to handle any abuse. Then you have to buy a controller too.

 

I was drifting mine, so i bought ball bearings, ally prop, adjustable alloy suspension, lower turn engine etc etc.

 

In my opinion its a great way to start. If you dont like it much it doesnt cost too much, but if you do you can upgrade what breaks or upgrade the whole lot in one go.

 

I also bought a racing Yokomo. I think it was an M-1 chassis or a similar name like that. Was worth a fortune. Carbon fibre everything with a triple 9t motor. It did about 60 odd mph with the right gears. I only paid about £80 in the end and got a massive amount of kit with it. It mght be worth you buying a raced car on ebay. That way you know its been properly maintained, whereas if you buy a built tt-01 kit it couldve been built by any numpty.

 

And you can also buy ready built TT-01 kits for about £150 i think, some even with controllers etc.

just a note on the cheaper end of tamiya, they really are just slightly better than toys really, no Ball Bearings, plastic props etc, cost a fortune to upgrade to get a decent spec too which is what i did with mine, the least you should do is bearing and oil shock upgrade... unfortunatly tamiya go from one extreme to the other, thier top end race chassis is 600 quid and thats with no wheels/tyres, shell ,radio or any ellectrics.

 

Yokomo are very good, i had hours of fun with a mates drift car for a while, the makes to look at are schumacher, yokomo, and all the well known brands that are well istablished in the scene.

 

AVOID chiniese copies, and brands like "the big happy fun car" etc... they may seem a bargain untill you realise that there is no spares back up whatsoever rendering the car scrap after something as simple as a broken wishbone (which of course will happen).

 

one of the few nitros i would recoment is a schumacher menace, was a tiny 1/18th staduim truck with a twist, it had a huge 1.8th scale buggy nitro engine, these things do shift il tell ya! you dont need a huge space to use it and it will run on pretty much any surface too.

 

you can often get really good deals by buying race models that are about 18 months out of date, when the hype about them has dropped off and a newer version comes out you get really good deals from dealers that have a few on the shelves, but remember brand is everything as is the all important spares back up...if you cant get spares you may as well chuck it in the bin before using it.

Ive got an electric powered focus at home, beat my mates petrol one with it, steel bearings, 11 winde stock rod engine and a few other mods. Its great because all you do is plug the battery in turn on the controller and your away, none of that 'troublesome starting' you get with petrol r/c cars. Ive also got an electric glider plane and an electric helicopter. Im selling the helicopter because its to hard to fly! £100 if anyones interested.

Sorry, no chance, the marder is 1/6th scale, those shells are for 1/8th, they are way too small... i think you need to see a marder in the flesh to apreciate how big it is, its not to be confused with the smaller 1/8th scale nitro buggies, the marder is 23+ cc petrol, the 1/8th buggies are around 3.5cc nitro.

 

there was a guy on ebay selling 1/6th mk1 escort bodies with bubbles to fit the marder, they were around 300 quid at the time, but no one purchased so the project was scrapped, very few weer made but they did look the tits when touring car wheels were used to fill the arches.
