Is anyone else here having problems with scam emails after bidding on eBay at the moment? The last week I've bid on a few things but been well beaten... then after the listing has closed I'm getting a message saying I've won the item with my bid because the winning bidder has had payment problems, or that I can have the 'second chance' offer... the first was pretty easy to spot as it sounded like it was translated from a russian/english phrase book, but the second cahnce offer was on a proper looking eBay page and I'd already replied to it before I thought about it and investigated... and yep, it was a bloody scammer!!

Is it just me or is this a major problem at the mo on there?

I desperately want to reply to one of these with some seriously foul language... but will that mean they can get some sort of info from me?

eBay advice is not to reply at all, so I guess I'd better not.

One tip on eBay about it is that if you get a message in your regular email account it should also appear in the 'your eBay' section on the site if it is genuine... and all the ones I'm getting haven't so I guess that's a good double check.

Read about that somewhere else thats the newest scam and a lot of people are falling for it

I can believe it, the one that was on a proper-looking eBay page was scarily accurate.... it even had a link for reporting dodgy looking emails on it!

This was tonights 'offer'...

emailed to my Hotmail account

Dear ebay member,I am the seller of the eBay item number : 220038277803, and I've just been contacted by the eBay staff who informed me that the winner of this item got rejected due to security reasons (either failed to follow through on the purchase commitment or outright refused to do so). Your last auctioned bid prior to being outbided is taken into consideration as eBay policy automatically proclaims you to be the winner by default. Nevertheless,I need your agreement on this so I may contact eBay to confirm your winning position otherwise I'll relist the item. If you're interested please confirm by forwarding this message to fur1tot@aol.com and include your name, address and ebay ID.

Thanks!

Like I said, how thick do they think I am....? and no that's not answers on a postcard!

May be Africa On Line though... probably the brother of that bloke in the Nigerian Ministry who still owes me lots of money for 'borrowing' my bank account the other week...

Excellent point, did you forward it onto ebay so they can investigate???????

Most of the ebay scam e-mails are easy enough to spot as they come through from an 'ebay.com' address rather than an 'ebay.co.uk'.

Basically though, if you don't get the message through 'my ebay - messages' and it ONLY appears in your e-mails, then it's a scam. DON'T click on the links and enter your details 'cos if you do..........well, they've just got your password haven't they?

Well there we go, what a fine piece of spot-on journalism that must have been and what a service those boys are giving to their readers to notify us of such things!:wink::wink::wink::wink:
