Would it have been made for tax reasons.

Probaly a sleeved down 1100 block??

Thers a bit on here, but its in Itiallian

I've translated it from google seach -

The first series, produced in the British plants of the Ford group, famous also as "Escort MK1" came introduced in 1968 and characterized for one enough soft line and of vague inspiration American.

Available in the versions sedan 2 doors and Sedan 4 doors, the "Escort" headed all at the concretezza and the reliability of its the simple and sturdy mechanics. No vezzo, therefore, but a solid motor to 4 cylinders with lateral camshaft and distribution to auctions and bilanceri, a solid posterior suspension to rigid axle with leaf crossbows (were the independent wheels McPherson) and a classic manual change to 4 marce. The refraining system completed the picture mixed (dischi/tamburi).

On the market it collected the inheritance of the Ford Anglia. At the moment of the debut the Escort was available with 2 motors, one of 940cc (44cv) and one of 1098cc (53cv), 2 auto bodies and 2 preparations: Base (only 940cc) and De Luxe (940 and 1100cc). Little months after the launch, it came rendered available also the version Station Wagon to 3 doors, with single motor 1100, is in version base that "De Luxe".

The "Escort Mexico" exposed to the Hall of Turin of 1971All' the beginning of the 1969 only sedan came introduced "Escort GT" (, is to 2 that to 4 doors), moved from 4 cylinders of 1298cc from 76cv, and the "1,3 Escort De Luxe" (sedan and Wagon), with motor 1298cc from 59cv.

In 1970 1600 "(single sedan came introduced the" RS 2 doors), with motor bitree of 1601cc from 110cv, destined to one sport and facoltosa customers. To the aim to satisfy also an user less demanding, in 1971 the calmest and economic "Mexico" was introduced in list (only sedan 2 doors), moved from the version monotree from 86cv of the 4 cylinders of 1601cc.

The "1300 GT" before and "RS 1600" then, made from base to the versions employed with succeeding (two tito them world-wide ones) in the World Championship Rally. The production of the "Escort Mk1" stopped in 1975.

The 950cc engine was not available in the UK as the base model here was the 1100 (1098cc actually). This was supplemented by the 1300 (1297cc) in both standard and GT trim. The GT version used a Weber carb and hotter cam producing 72bhp. This same engine was also used in the Sport. Apparently very few 950's were sold across Europe the general inclination being to get the 1100. I seem to recall the 950 as being described as "underpowered"!

The early Sport featured the Rev Counter mounted in a pod on top of the dash along with the 1100 instrument binnacle but the late ones used the 6 dial dash from the GT, 1300E and XLS cars.

The 950cc engine later on re-appeared in mildly modified form to allow it to be used for front wheel drive as the Valencia unit in the smallest engined Fiesta. The 950 Fiesta wasn't exactly quick - 85mph and 17.6 seconds to 60. Compare that to a current 1000cc Daihatsu Charade which does 93mph and 0-60 in 15 seconds or the Escort TC which could reach 113 mph and 0-60 in 9.9 seconds. Gives an idea of what a 950 Escort with less than half the power of the Twink would be like.
