The movie was loosely based on a novel Fair Game by Paula Gosling, which was also filmed under that title in 1995; it also arose out of Stallone's original ideas for the film Beverly Hills Cop. He had wanted to make a less comedic, more action-oriented film. When he left that project, Eddie Murphy was brought in to play the lead role.

The film was a modest hit at the box office, but was widely panned by critics for its cartoonish violence and cliched plot. The tagline on the movie poster was "Crime is a disease... meet the cure". Some critics mocked this as "Stallone is a disease... acting lessons are the cure" or "Cobra is a disease... there is no cure."

During the 1990s, the film started to receive positive recognition as a symbol of 1980s excess in filmmaking. Many of the movie's over the top lines and Stallone's one liners were memorized, mostly by younger males. Combined with some extravagant action sequences, muscle cars and 80s clothing and music, many people started viewing the movie as "so bad it was good". This earned Cobra a devoted cult following.

If you want bad Stallone movies, look no further than 1975's Death Race 2000, truly a seashell movie

Surely that was never more than a trailer!!

Seashell?

Seashell?

No it was a real movie, stallones first I think and it was truly apalling but has indeed gained cult status and following.

Sorry that was perhaps a little cryptic, Demolition Man? The seashell scene, the seashells are a gadget that has replaced bog roll?
