boXXer Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 ive currently got a type 9 gearbox in my car, and yesterday @ brands hatch i managed to kill the syncro on 3rd gear, so now it crunches every time i use it! im pretty sure it has a std box in it at the moment, but im looking into upgrading it. What would you suggest? are the 4i boxes any better? What ratios would i be looking at? or what about a tran x uprated job? thanks! Mike
Admin Mk2Jo Posted December 11, 2007 Admin Report Posted December 11, 2007 What about a T5 cossie box?
boXXer Posted December 11, 2007 Author Report Posted December 11, 2007 ratios are too long for a pinto i think. plus you need a custom prop if i recall correctly.
Admin Vista Posted December 11, 2007 Admin Report Posted December 11, 2007 ratios are too long for a pinto i think. plus you need a custom prop if i recall correctly. That's what I've been advised too, (T5 ratios bit) Don't Quaife do an uprated T9 with a variety of gear ratios to choose from? Here's one for rich buggers http://www.quaife.co.uk/Ford-Sierra-Typ ... y-maincase And cheaper ones on this page for those of us without bottomless wallets http://www.quaife.co.uk/FORD-GEARBOX/CurrentPage/2
razersedge Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 tran-x do the same thing, i just got a type 9 straight cut box tran-x for £1150 brand new with my own choice if ratios (selection from a small list) from peter Lloyd, £350 cheaper than quaife and there are lower ratios on the list of the tran-x, but all of the ratios are a lot higher than standard ford. it come straight from tran-x and was with me in 10 day from order. first gear ford 3.69 tran-x 2.49 quaife 2.38
ratman Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 I've got a T9 with 2.8 gears 1st Gear: 3.36, 2nd Gear: 1.81, 3rd Gear: 1.26, 4th Gear: 1.00, 5th Gear: 0.825 got mine from here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ford-TYPE-9-Gearb ... dZViewItem But Ring them you can haggle a price I did
Admin Vista Posted December 11, 2007 Admin Report Posted December 11, 2007 Good price Ratman Bit cheeky of them advertising it as a close ratio box though, they're standard 2.8i ratios aren't they? Standard ratios as follows 4-pot... 1st=3.65, 2nd=1.97, 3rd=1.37, 4th=1, 5th=0.82 V6........1st=3.36, 2nd=1.81, 3rd=1.26, 4th=1, 5th=0.82
razersedge Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 from the price id say its standard recon or hardened bearings but standard gears which is fine depending how hard on gearboxes you are or what power you got
boXXer Posted December 11, 2007 Author Report Posted December 11, 2007 well i got 185hp, so not loads. dont really want a straight cut box either, as they are a pain to use arent they?
razersedge Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 same as a normal box its just up rated the only difference is the gearbox wines and if the car is striped out then it is quite loud but no louder than a set of barking 48's or a loud exhaust but if you add all that together then you are mad, hardcore osf or deaf............ i'm mad which are you, but as sounds go it is a cool one
Guest MK1gaz Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 I've got a Tran-x straight cut type 9 as well and they are brilliant . Rated at 250 bhp , fit inside a standard tunnel with minimum work unlike a T5 which needs the car cut in half , pick your ratios instead of the turbo ones in a T5 , rapid gearchange at high revs unlike a T5 which is notchy , Bolt an rs2000 size prop straight on as well . Job done and they aren't too noisey either (i have soundproofing , carpet + full interior so maybe it's because of that ) . Tran-x do cheap freshen ups as well plus they hold they're price so if you buy a new one for £1200 you can sell it 20 years later for £700
razersedge Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 this is a vid of mine on the rolling road it's been on here a couple of times but you can hear the wine from the gearbox when is starting to drive it in 1st 2nd 3rd if i remember it gets drowned out in 4th but mine is a steering wheel, seat and engine car
w p e Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 i use a quaife straight cut all alloy pro box all singing and dancing good for 280hp. i break the fooker every time out so now got a dog box. mike if you dont want all the noise then get a semi heli coil gear set there not so loud
boXXer Posted December 11, 2007 Author Report Posted December 11, 2007 ok thanks guys! looking at Tran-x's website, they do a "dog" box.... http://www.tran-x.com/gearboxHTML/SL72DG.html and a type 9 synchromesh..... http://www.tran-x.com/gearboxHTML/FT9sync.html is it the dox box that whines? i LOVE that noise! Who do the semi gear conversions then wayne? does this one look any good? how much are they new? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ford-type-9-TRAN- ... dZViewItem

boXXer Posted December 12, 2007 Author Report Posted December 12, 2007 hmmmm, im thinking straight cut now! not as pricey as i thought they were either.
boXXer Posted December 12, 2007 Author Report Posted December 12, 2007 whats the difference between the £1150 tran x box, and the £2850 dog box they do? is the cheaper one a straight cut one? CONFUSED!
andypipe Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 The cheaper one still has syncro rings. The dearer one does away with these and has dog gears to help the gears in. In theory you can do clutchless upshifts. The also do a direct top in 5th with the dog box. Thats the one im going for hopefully
