bmxdave Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 Ok so my halfshaft went pop. What should i do? The axle is a cortina GT on a 100e. Would it be worth getting some stronger half shafts by quaife or someone similar. Or would it be worth getting hold of a 105e axle and building it up with stronger half shafts? This way i can fit 7" wheels. And how much are these going to cost? And where can i get them? Also, i remember reading in a mag not too long ago about ready built heavy duty, short axles. I know they cost a few bob but if its a fit and go jobbie and its strong then i think itd be worth it.

sambo Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 Mate, you shouldnt have problems with your English axle with your 2.1 140bhp pinto.? I, and a lot of others have run more power through a standard english and it'll cope fine. What size tyres are you running? Maybe it was just weak? I say replace it and you should be fine.
V8ian Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 Shafts will age harden over time, as any metal will, the English axle should be adequate for your use, one thing will possibly make shafts break will be swopping them from side to side as, the best way to strengthen the axle would be fit a LSD, as this spreads the load between both shafts, with the added bonus of making the car more fun to drive
bmxdave Posted December 12, 2007 Author Report Posted December 12, 2007 Its only got Mexico steels on it. I dont know if i want to commit to a 105e axle yet, so ill save it for the future. Im after an LSD in the future but theyre not cheap, and im not rich! Ive been offered some RS half shafts. Im not sure how many teeth each diff has though. Is a cortina 16 tooth and an escort 18? If so can i fit an escort diff, and will the shafts be not too long? Are they 48.5 inches like the cortina?
V8ian Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 All english axles have the same ampunt of splines, If you have a Cortina axle its not an option to fit mex shafts as they are differnt lengths.
bmxdave Posted December 12, 2007 Author Report Posted December 12, 2007 Quaife English Group 1 halfshaft length =730mm with 16 splines {Atlas}. Quaife English Group 1 flanges, Quaife number D1T1-19 also 16 splines Would these fit? Im a bit confused by it all. I dont know all the widths and that. So escort RS shafts wont fit?
Admin Vista Posted December 13, 2007 Admin Report Posted December 13, 2007 The best way to strengthen the axle would be fit a LSD, as this spreads the load between both shafts You know, despite the fact that I've had one for years in a succession of OSF's, that had never occured to me before. Staring me in the face too when I consider it
