countrybumpkin Posted January 2, 2008 Report Posted January 2, 2008 i have a vibration on my mk1, it starts at arround 55mph and gose at about 75mph i'm guessing it probably going to be the prop out of balance or a uj but dose anyone else have any ideas as to what could cause the vibration?
countrybumpkin Posted January 2, 2008 Author Report Posted January 2, 2008 i dont think it is the wheels as they are brand new and the vibrtion was there before i put them on
Admin Vista Posted January 2, 2008 Admin Report Posted January 2, 2008 You could well be right with your first diagnosis, I've known props to do exactly what you're describing, and at similar speeds too.
capriluke Posted January 2, 2008 Report Posted January 2, 2008 most likely:- prop wheels (if front you will feel it in the steering wheel?!?) bearings 1/2 shafts diff what did it do b4? has it always done it? and have you changed/worked on it lately??
countrybumpkin Posted January 2, 2008 Author Report Posted January 2, 2008 it has alwys done it since i first fittted the 5 speed box about 6 months ago, i change the engine and box about 2 weeks ago for lower milage units but it vibrated before and still dose so cant be engine and box, also today i nocked it out of gear going down hill and still had the vibration

PaulAshman Posted January 2, 2008 Report Posted January 2, 2008 Had the same problem on my capri and it was rear wheel bearings.
32 HI-BOY Posted January 2, 2008 Report Posted January 2, 2008 well go to a garage there you might be told who knows
emu Posted January 2, 2008 Report Posted January 2, 2008 The vibration was there with your old wheels, tyres, engine and gearbox? So you can be fairly certain they arent to blame. But dont discount them totally. Did you have to change the prop when you fitted the 5 speed? or did you reuse your old one? Are your wheels sitting properly on the hubs? Many aftermarket alloys are supposed to have a plastic ring fitted in them which matches the size of the centre bore to the diameter of the hub. Often they are missing though which means that your wheels can sit off-centre on the hub. Try loosening and re-torquing your wheelnuts with the wheel off the ground. Do you have a single peice prop or a two peice (the one thats mounted to the body in the middle) If you have a two peice then check for excessive wear in the rubber centre doughnut. As a semi-bodgy, very time consuming solution you could put a hose clip round the prop. By moving it around you should be able to make the vibration better or worse. But I didnt suggest that
Stu_B Posted January 2, 2008 Report Posted January 2, 2008 Sounds exactly like my mk3, the prop was slightly bent on that.
sab6024 Posted January 2, 2008 Report Posted January 2, 2008 My old MK1 kept knocking gearboxes out for a pastime, prop was bent. Nasty vibrations through the car, interior mirror doing a figure of eight and trying to catch the stick to change gear.....yep those were the days
Mrs O/H/C Posted January 2, 2008 Report Posted January 2, 2008 OUR CORTINA DID THAT FOR A WHILE...IT WAS BECAUSE THE PROP WAS OUT OF TRUE MR LEAD FOOT CHANGED THE PROP AND IT HAS BEEN LIKE NEW SINCE
Stu_B Posted January 3, 2008 Report Posted January 3, 2008 My ex loved it... but thats for the adult room
young un Posted January 3, 2008 Report Posted January 3, 2008 we get the same in our escort and have been told that its the shell booming/vibrating and the best way to stop it is to accelerate through it
countrybumpkin Posted January 4, 2008 Author Report Posted January 4, 2008 the wheels are revolutions so dont need plasic spacers, the prop i used with the 5 speed was a mk1 rs2000 single peice, i replaced both ujs when i got it, i might order a brand new one from burtons next week, i dont think it can be the shell vibrating as te gearstic vibrates heavly between those speeds

countrybumpkin Posted January 4, 2008 Author Report Posted January 4, 2008 no i didnt, i've replaced uj's before and not had a problem but yeah i can see why it should need balancing, but unforchantly theres no one round here that can do it i think i'll just buy a new one
countrybumpkin Posted January 8, 2008 Author Report Posted January 8, 2008 thanks for all your help, i fitted a brand new prop from burtons today and it is now vibration free
