danny69 Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 I have done a pretty thorough search and the consencus seems to be that most people run their OSF on 20/50 oil. The thing is, my essex V6 sends the oil pressure needle off the top of the scale when it starts up and doesn`t really drop much even when warm and on tick over. I wonder if I could do with a 10W/40? What do you reckon?
boXXer Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 20/50 is spot on i would say. Thats what i run, and i get around 90psi when cold, dropping to just under 80 when warm all @ 2k
danny69 Posted January 8, 2008 Author Report Posted January 8, 2008 Cheers, I was just a little worried that too much oil pressure could be a bad thing? But if it works for you I`ll do the same.
boXXer Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 yeah i suppose it can be, but were rediculous amounts i would have thought.
Rude Dog Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 Also you really have no idea how accurate the gauge is if its just the standard Capri OEM oil pressure gauge.
Muttley MK2 Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 It sounds to me like your pressure relief valve may be stuck. Oil pumps are usually high volume not high pressure. Get it checked with an accurate gauge. Too high an oil pressure can do all sorts of damage to seals and gaskets!
kevmk2 Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 HT's use valvoline racing 20/50 in their engines,if its good enough for a race engine then its good enough for anything
danny69 Posted January 8, 2008 Author Report Posted January 8, 2008 Thanks for all the replies I will get the Valvoline 20/50 for the next change and if I get the oppurtunity I will check the accuracy of the gauge.
KEVSWAYV6 Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 I use Millers 20/50 Classic Sport semi-synthetic in my 3.0 Essex. Guage goes to three quarters up when cold and settles to just over halfway once warm That's with a standard oil pump.
boXXer Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 HT's use valvoline racing 20/50 in their engines,if its good enough for a race engine then its good enough for anything Exactly what Steve @ Vulcans told me to use in mine when he built it. They did a breakdown test on different oils, and Valvoline was miles ahead of the rest.

They did a breakdown test on different oils, and Valvoline was miles ahead of the rest. I had at least 3 cam failures - worn lobes, untill I went to Valvoline 20-50, no problems ever since. All the Valvoline stuff is great, diff & gear oil too.
