Josh_gsy Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 Well my cortina has been off the roads months too long and i have decided to pull my thumb outta myu arse and fix it. i took the timing cover off after fun and joys with the 2 of the sump bolts. and found a broken chain... simple i thought new chain... so i went routing in the sump with a magnet for the rest of the chain and have found something else! is there anythiing that would have fallen in the sump when i took the cover off thats half a circle and washer looking about 5cm diameter? [/img]
flyingbanana Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 thats the oil thrower like the one on the bench?
Josh_gsy Posted January 19, 2008 Author Report Posted January 19, 2008 no unfortunatly not.. cheers tho looks kinda like this draiwng and on one side has two grooves in it (between the black lines). i was wandering if it is a half spacer /weight/washer that goes between the crank and a main bearing?
davreeve Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 YEp ,Thats what it is(thrust washer),,There are 2 one either side of the centre main bearing cap.
Josh_gsy Posted January 19, 2008 Author Report Posted January 19, 2008 shit... so what does this mean? its not important and i dont need it?
V8ian Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 That could be the reason the chain broke, allowing the Crank to move backwards and forwards, Its Sump off time, could be bad, , or you may get away with it, Worst ways its a new engine, but you may be lucky
Josh_gsy Posted January 23, 2008 Author Report Posted January 23, 2008 can the sump be taken off and work done whilst the engine is in the car? if not i best start saving my pennies as i wont really wanna put a 1300 back in it.
Rick Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 ouch.... it take the engine out and do it properly. something else may have been damaged...

I also agree with Rick as well. You should take the crank out to inspect it and the center bearing cap. Why? Well the crank has been sliding backwards and forwards hitting the other thrust and hitting the block. You maybe lucky by fitting new thrusts, but if you don't inspect it all and it's damaged, a new pair of thrusts wont last long. Is there any valve damage as the chain must have snapped while it was running???
w p e Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 thrust bearing fella [/img] i hope that ones going in a vauxhall and not a x/flow
Muttley MK2 Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 Is it not the spacer that goes behind the cam gear? I would think it would be difficult for the thrust washer to fall out on its own. I have had problems when fitting duplex chains with the securing bolts hitting the cam spacer washer. Maybe wrong but thought I would give my two penneth
Josh_gsy Posted January 23, 2008 Author Report Posted January 23, 2008 It def aint the thrust bearing as you shown in the pic.. ain that half the big end bearing as my part is about 2mm thick! what does the spacer that goes behind the cam look like?
Muttley MK2 Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 The spacer has two holes in it about a 1/4 inch dia and the radius of the curve is about 1" it is also about 2mm thick!!
Josh_gsy Posted January 23, 2008 Author Report Posted January 23, 2008 Hahaha found my Haynes just looked at the crank assemble and the part i have looks like either 13,14,34? which is more likely?

Rick Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 the other things in the picture are just rubber gaskets mate its defo a thrust washer (no.13)
Josh_gsy Posted January 24, 2008 Author Report Posted January 24, 2008 well im only gonna run that engine till i can afford a newer bigger and better one, is it pointless putting it back together without the thrust washer. or will it run for abit if i take it easy?
