richie_stix Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 right now... I'm affraid i just caught my cappa smoking (oh the shame)! it now emits tiny poofs of white cloud on tickover, now this could be condensation as the engine was warm but it was still a cold day and we were parked in the shade... it's fine when a little gas is applied, the 'smoke' seems to stop? my old engine, a 1.6 pinto, used blow blueish smoke all the time and quite a considereable amount of it which is why i chucked it in favor of the newer one... so what I'm basicly asking is what do the different colours of smoke mean and how can it be remedied? i think black smoke is un-burnt fuel but i would like somone to fill me in on the rest!. the engine was recently rebuilt bout 6000 or so miles ago (not by me tho, previous owner) so I'm hopin it doesn't need to be taken apart more! please help anyone, cheers!
john_3.0s Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 Black smoke is un-burnt fuel Blue smoke is oil white smoke (is prob actually steam) and prob condensation in the exhaust LOADS of white smoke is diesel in your tank
bortaf Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 If it only does it on idle and when first started i'd say the valve stem seals may need attention soon
richie_stix Posted January 22, 2008 Author Report Posted January 22, 2008 normal sort of amount of steam when started, but it still smokes or steams a very little on idle when warm... only just noticed it today cos its hardly noticable.... what would be involved in valve stem seal work? it doesn't smell bad, just petroly, but all old cars smell of petrol tho i thought...
Mr Sam Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 head off, all the valves out new stem seals, valves back in head back on easy peasy with a x'flow ive never toyed with a pinto so cant comment cant be much harder just a camshft instead of rockershaft oh and mine needed doing well over a year ago little bit of oil down the stems doesnt hurt and high performance heads dont even have them
Muttley MK2 Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 1. White smoke, does it use water? If it doesnt dont worry about it. 2. Blue smoke, on start up then clears, valve guide seals. If it also smokes blue on acceleration then it may be rings. 3. Black smoke with excessive fuel consumption, carb u/s. My 3 litre capper gives off white emissions all the time in this weather!!
richie_stix Posted January 23, 2008 Author Report Posted January 23, 2008 was some expensive castrol for old engines, i think 10-40w or maybe 5-40...not sure but it's got a little of shitty tesco oil in there cos i needed a bit of a top up and tesco was the only place around.... but it isn't going through water so I'm not going to worry bout it cos its not blue or black so i can worry about the other hundred jobs that need doin!
Messenjah Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 yeah probsably valve stem seals m8 ..... try a 20/50 oil as its thicker and might reduce the amound going down the guides
