antz Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 Ive had an idea!!!!! Thinking about retrofords article of 'can you build a track car in 4 days for £4k'…I have decided wanna build my own rally slag!....well not a rally car but something that looks like one and for arseing around in the forrestry and things next winter as a mini project when the teerracotta terror is off the road….(plus I can do things I darent do to the terror. Like strip it, cage it etc and itll also help me learn to weld!) So with everyones extensive knowledge of OSF's on here would you say that its possible to build a road legal rally slag (minus the horny engine) for £800 including buying the car? I did some math and providing I could find a mk2 escort for under £500 (yeah right!) then I reckon it could be done…my total came to £820!!!...I don’t have the cash at the moment so I have plenty of time to plan and save the money (unless someone has a mk2 escort they will sell me and let me pay in monthly installments!) Can it be done or am I thinking about performing the impossible?
Stu_B Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 Theres so many costs when building a car it can all soon add up! My Anglias at about £1500 inc the £375 purchase price... I couldn't even tell you off the top of my head where it's all gone
Admin Mk2Jo Posted February 25, 2008 Admin Report Posted February 25, 2008 It will depend also on how authentic you want it to be ... what spec you want to go to or if it is to be purely cosmetic
bomber1 Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 probaly in time u could do it cheap. ie buy good second hand parts. like roll cage adjustable legs etc. also what do u want to power it and how much power do u want out off said engine? 4days and 4grand maybee but u would need all the bits sat on the floor at the start off the 4days imo 4days and less than a grand no way! escort tec had a rally slag mk2 4door they would have sold complete for around £1500
tim Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 buy an escort, bolt on some spot lights, cage, harness and belts and away you go
Stu_B Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 escort tec had a rally slag mk2 4door they would have sold complete for around £1500 Something like that is your best bet
MexDan Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 Cost all depends on how far you want to go with it and what you want to do with it.. What are you planning on doing with it?? Driving it through forests or just chucking it round on the road??? You could probably do something that looks a bit like a rally car.. but you wouldnt get the workings of a rally car.. if you get what I mean But if you buy a fairly decent shell you can flog the road bits on ebay and raise a bit of cash to buy some 'rally' componants that way
antz Posted February 25, 2008 Author Report Posted February 25, 2008 buy an escort, bolt on some spot lights, cage, harness and belts and away you go that was it really!!!! keep it simple on uprated springs, roll cage, belts, spots and thats it!!! also a fancy rattle can paint job and some stickers. just some arsing around fun in the forrests...nothing fast...1.3 xflow would do but a 1.6xflow would be better
davreeve Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 As a basic rule of thumb work out the costs down to every last detail ,then double that figure and you wont be too far out
antz Posted February 25, 2008 Author Report Posted February 25, 2008 As a basic rule of thumb work out the costs down to every last detail ,then double that figure and you wont be too far out i know trouble is ill keep adding bits on. i worked down to £825 for just about everything but thats providing i can get a car and it wont be for a few months anyway whilst i save my pennies
Wessie Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 i wouldnt do a rally car on a budget, i'd rather spend more money on quality itmes (roll cage, seat, harnesses, brakes etc) then skimping about its all fun and games until your in a tree or on your roof
ZetecVan 2.0 Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 Why don't you finish the car you're doing before moving on to the next...?
Toby Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 Why don't you finish the car you're doing before moving on to the next...? Yeah or it will get doubley dear!!
Rick Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 Theres so many costs when building a car it can all soon add up!My Anglias at about £1500 inc the £75 purchase price... I couldn't even tell you off the top of my head where it's all gone theres costs that you dont even plan for in a build as stu says you look back and think how the fook have i spent all that. welding wire, steel, panels, filler, sandpapers, thinners, etc etc youl prob spend 500 quid on these things alone over the period of the build
mossy Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 Why don't you finish the car you're doing before moving on to the next...? Yeah or it will get doubley dear!! ditto! never play with 2cars....just ends up with continuous phone calls from mr bank manager saying you owe them money!
slappy Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 double the money as there is allways that little extra what ja ma call it that you see and think that's nice i'll fit that, oh and I think i'll just scrape that piece of underseal off so double your time, I just took my two door off the road to change the engine, two years later still a bare shell and the wife wants to know how much it's cost.
mossy Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 the wife wants to know how much it's cost. mum and dad keep asking me how much ive spent whenever a parcel arrives....Im scared to add it up for everything car wise ive brought over the years.
slappy Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 I have the parcels sent to my mums so the wife don't know, guess who wears the pant's.
antz Posted February 26, 2008 Author Report Posted February 26, 2008 ok well i wanan build another cos i like my car but theres certain thigns i dont wanna do it so another car would be an option. i understand never play with two cars and i can see that being a problem for me!!!! i know about all these extra costs but it would never be a concourse mint paint job (rattle cans!) so its be cheap tart up, make safe, have fun job.....and itd help me learn to weld on a car that if i cock up i dont care as much.
Rick Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 if you want to learn to weld pick up a 50 quid banger first and make some holes and dents in it to play with. when your pro, sell the 4 door and get a project 2 door
antz Posted February 26, 2008 Author Report Posted February 26, 2008 i dont want a shitter of a car to mess around with cos i dtn have the space. to learn id rather have the incentive of something good to weld... and you of all people should know i dont do 2 doors
Retromotorsport Posted February 27, 2008 Report Posted February 27, 2008 i dont want a shitter of a car to mess around with cos i dtn have the space. to learn id rather have the incentive of something good to weld... and you of all people should know i dont do 2 doors So get a 4 door S I E R R A (someone change the poxy swear filter) and cage that, if you have an off its 50 quid for another shell ... or even get an old 3/5 series BMW To be honest .. and brutally honest .. i'll tell you how much fun you'll have in the forrests with a budget car ... none .. you'll be at the side of the road with a holed sump, ripped off suspension , rear doors that dont open anymore because the shells bent , etc etc If you want to weld .... start buying MOT failures for peanuts.. get them MOT'ed and sell them .. learn a lot and earn little .. not learn a little and spend a lot.
antz Posted February 27, 2008 Author Report Posted February 27, 2008 good advice retro....thanks... i dont really have the room or the enthusiam for old manky plastic cars that need welding...thats my problem.. ...i wanted another escort for the enthusiam and to arse around with. but the way thigns are going ill be lucky to afford to live on bread and water for the next 3 weeks
