Ignition Systems...

What are your thoughts and preferences people???

 

I am going to be looking at binning my Fizz-Pop electronic distributor in favour of a new modified distributor... or... mappable ignition system.

 

What are the pro's and con's on both of these systems? What have you got fitted? And how much do either retail at?

 

BTW, when I say mappable ignition system, I mean a system like Mega Jolt

I wouldn't bother with mappable ignition on a standard engine, get a Bestek kit, about £130. The advance curve can be modified at a later date if you plan engine changes

Yeah but the megajolt set up will only cost yo £130 quid. It can be a bit of a pain to set up and iron out the bugs - but after a few hours it was all good

Tom... with a Mega-jolt kit, do you get a TDC sensor? If so, do you get the parts to fit it???

Bestek kits can be fitted in minutes and all parts are brand new.

 

My record for fitting a kit is 9 minutes 51 seconds

 

If you upgrade your engine at a later date John at Bestek will probably adjust your advance curve for free.

 

 

You won't have to scrabble around scrap yards looking for grubby second hand ignition parts that might not work

He just needs to know your engine spec or if you know a bit about timing you can tell him what you want.

 

No they don't need the car, its pre-set in the dizzy.

 

Bestek are also doing mappable dizzys where switchable advance curves are pre-set in the dizzy itself !

I think the MegaJolt will be a lot more effort to fit. (Finding the parts, making brackets to hold the sensors, etc.)

 

So, as suggested, the Bestek kit sounds like the best bet for a standard engine.

 

Although, if you are after a mini-project then you might enjoy doing the MegaJolt.

I have lumention and would go bestek next time...mine has a dirty great box bolted to the inner wing

just ordered an electronic replacement for the points on my Capri- Bosch distributor. Came to less than $40 + $27 postage form the U S of A.

My mate already has one fitted to his Capri and it works great.

let me know how easy it is to fit, and how well it works, saw them on ebay and wondered

my mate already has one fitted. He took his dizzi out to do it and put it back the wrong way round (pratt). After getting it sorted for him all ran well and has done for several months now. He reckons he has a bit of extra poke although it is always subjective.

It cost me $107 for 2 systems (one for the crapi, one for the vee dub) which you have to pay by paypal. I 'll give a blow by blow when I get it delivered and fitted.
