This september i finish my apprenticeship contract (although my apprenticeship finished last year, i have to serve an extra year on reduced pay) and finally go onto full pay. My original intention was to begin looking for my own house. With all this credit crunch bullshit going around and a distinct lack of deposit on my behalf it looks like its not happening anytime soon.

So my new plan is to treat myself to a nice new car. I will budget as if im paying a mortgage, take away the costs of the car and the rest i will dump in an isa and a savings account towards a future deposit, hopefully putting me in a better situation in say, 3 years time.

I dont know what sort of car to go looking for though. I want comfort and luxury but i need some performance or dare i say it, street cred.

Ive been looking at early Lexus IS200's and insurance wont be too bad. But they lack the welly im used to in the pop.

I like MR2 turbos too. Ive tried insurance on Evos but i need to be 25 but im suere i could get insured elsewhere.

Anyone got any tips on what cars to look for? I want to start looking soon because its quite a big purchase to me. Im looking at spending between £3000 and £7000 but no more then £1200 on insurance. The Lexus came in at just under £1000. Id hope for the cars price to not drop like a stone but of course you cant avoid some depreciation.

Cheers  Im hoping theres some interesting suggestions out there :D

They depreciate pretty quickly.. you can get a low milage year old one for £12000 won't be long till they're affordable

Im interested in Type R's but im not sure about the fwdness although ive heard one with a bike can on the back and thought it was a bike, sounded lovely hitting the limiter.

Ive thought about MX5's too but theyre not quick enough. Im not after something ridiculously fast but i dont wanna be shown up by any boy racers.

I dont like scoobys but for some reason i reckon the bug eyes are cool. I could get insured on a liner i dont think.

I do like the idea of the passat though, ill definately look into them. Same for the Cupras but im not sure about insurance.

Id love a 300c touring but itd have to be a V8. No point in a DIEsel. Therefore i couldnt afford it. But they are on my 'one day ill own one of these' list.

And yeah, new Type R's = Gay. Theyre not even fast. I kept up with an old type R but i raped one of the new ones. Silly cars.

Oh and dont worry, the pops going nowhere. It might be coming off the road for a light resto, and time and money allowing a turbo pinto :D But thats way into the future yet, might not even happen. If i win the lotto anytime soon its getting a YB and Quaife sequential.

If i bought the Sil80 id have to go skidding in it, in which case id ditch it into a tree at some point so its probably not a good idea on my behalf.

Volvo T5, interesting. Theyre all autos though arent they except bobby cars? The only time id have an auto i think is with a lazy big v8.

passat

leon

ibiza

all use the same engine....not sure about the skodas would probs be easier to go for a lower spec model....Mines the 'sports edition' and comes fully loaded bar leather and parking sensors with only the Highline spec above it and its Grp15 insurance as it is!

For driver appeal and to stand out from the crowd, my money would be on a VR6 Corrado. Your budget will buy the best and lowest mileage VR6 storm around and they are way cooler than any jap motor

There's a nice sounding one in the autotrader just now for £5550

Seat leon turbo DEIsel i know what your thinking but get one chipped and they will piss on the cupra and are cheap to run not as good on the twisty stuff as the engine is heavy. Don't know what the insurance is like only took one for a test drive and the wife said it was too fast for her so she bought a 4x4 and she drives that like its stolen!

I dunno about a diesel. I hate the power delivery and the fact they dont rev. Driven a 1.9 Leon TDi with a 150 setup and it just didnt do it for me.

Id absolutely love a Corrado but theyre expensive to run and maintain.

And i dont reckon id get insured on a VR6.

be very careful about buying a passt or audi a4 1.8t they suffer low oil pressure due to the oil pump strainer blocking up, its not a 5min job either it doesnt matter what milege either low or high  seat leon & skoda octavia use same engines but some parts are not interchangeable passat & a4 r the same skoda fabia is part polo/golf hope this helps
