Guest MK1gaz Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 Who's seen the saab turbo mk2 escort project in this months Practical Performance Car magazine (practical scrap heap challenge magazine ) then ? My mates tuned one of those engines to 350bhp and it went well for 5mins until it blew up !!!!!!
Gonzo Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 You wanna use the Volvo straight-five or six rather than that saab thing.
Guest MK1gaz Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 You can by a complete working YB turbo engine + gearbox with a S.ierra wrapped around it for £1500-£2000 , and it fits
Gonzo Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 Yes, but that's been done to death... Why you think I'm dropping a 1600 4A-GE on bike carbs in my 'tina?
Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 Unfortunatley the main downfall with the old Turbocharged in line 4 was it's gearbox... it can just about take the standard 2.0 N/A power. Mind you, the crank, big ends, and mains including their shells are of SAAB 99 origin. As long as they're serviced really regularly (6000 miles), they run and run. I have seen quite a few with 250.000 miles on their clocks. One other thing... the new generation 900's, 9-3's & 9-5's have the old SAAB 9000 transverse 4 cylinder. These also have the same part numbers for the bottom end as the old 99's. SAAB's service intervals are at least double what they were for the 99 so there are alot of them going bang because they are not made for the long service intervals. I do like a SAAB 99 Turbo, and I was so very close to buying one before I got the Capri. A mate of mine has had a few over the years including a mega rare 900 Carlsson turbo. He has just recently bought a 9-3 Aero H.O.T & let me tell you, I am very tempted to buy one BTW... Jimbob trivia time - Who knows what SAAB stands for???
Admin Vista Posted May 16, 2008 Admin Report Posted May 16, 2008 BTW... Jimbob trivia time - Who knows what SAAB stands for??? Svenska Aeroplan AB (Swedish for "Swedish Aeroplane Limited") Wasn't it essentially the SAAB engine that ended up in the Dolomite, and then two grafted together in the Stag?
Guest MK1gaz Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 Yes, but that's been done to death... Why you think I'm dropping a 1600 4A-GE on bike carbs in my 'tina?done to death cos they fit , they work easy and IT'S A FORD ENGINE . Fair play for being different but that normally means slower with tons of grief and a finished car that's worth less
Stu_B Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 Yes, but that's been done to death... Why you think I'm dropping a 1600 4A-GE on bike carbs in my 'tina? Gonzo mate, You want to get yourself on 105speed.com as I believe Neil is developing an Anglia kit for that engine, shouldn't be much different to a 'tina
Guest MK1gaz Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 Gonzo mate, You want to get yourself on 105speed.com lol , 105notmuchspeed.com . He's got a fetish for designing kits to fit slow engines into anglias for some reason !!!!!!
mk1super Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 Why do i feel 50 plus pages coming and much disagreement
Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 BTW... Jimbob trivia time - Who knows what SAAB stands for??? Svenska Aeroplan AB (Swedish for "Swedish Aeroplane Limited") Wasn't it essentially the SAAB engine that ended up in the Dolomite, and then two grafted together in the Stag? Yay Vista wins a lolly You are nearly right mate, it's the other way round, the slanted 4 cylinder in the SAAB came from the Triumph. Before they used this engine, they had a V4 which came from something else... hhhmmm I wonder what that was from Although it wasn't the 2 litre Essex. I think it was the German version of the V4 as they were a 1500
Beakster Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 That would be the V4 1500 Cologne. My mate has a Saab 95 with one in it. I made a video of it and my other mates 1.6 Capri
Stu_B Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 Gonzo mate, You want to get yourself on 105speed.com lol , 105notmuchspeed.com . He's got a fetish for designing kits to fit slow engines into anglias for some reason !!!!!! Eat your words Gaz..... & your Hat & your shorts & anything else close to hand http://105speed.hyperboards.com/index.p ... 4&latest=1
Gonzo Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 Yes, but that's been done to death... Fair play for being different but that normally means slower with tons of grief and a finished car that's worth less I've been doing my research on these motors. They're not actually that much hassle to fit, and I won't have to piss about fitting Escort steering shite cuz the 4age's got a front bowl sump. Not to mention, as Stooby said, conversion kits to bolt up to the T9 box and off-the-shelf bits to fit carbs. Only thing I can foresee trouble with is the timing, but that's about it. I've read that the Japs are getting 170+BHP out of a STANDARD motor just by bolting Keihin FCR41's and a decent exhaust to 'em. Add a couple of adjustable cam sprockets, head skim, 99-octane fuel and a rolling-road session and that adds up to about 190+ in my books. AND the bottom ends can take being revved to 9k quite happily. And should I choose to invest in some lairy cams, associated valvetrain bits and some forged pistons, sources say around 220bhp is achievable, but by then you're looking at getting new mains and big ends just to be on the safe side. 4A-GEs? Slow, they ain't.
Guest Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 Gonzo mate, You want to get yourself on 105speed.com lol , 105notmuchspeed.com . He's got a fetish for designing kits to fit slow engines into anglias for some reason !!!!!! Say what you like about his stuff Gaz, I got a manifold and system off him for my Cortina and it gave me another 8bhp over what I had before, engine revs much free'er, looks the tits, sounds nice, fits well and he even did the delivery for free. Looking back over your history in the mags his Anglia has beaten you on nearly everything and when it hasnt its only been within 'enths of a second. If he's doing a 4AGE kit and Gonzo wants to fit one then good on him I say, they dont call it the Japanese BDA for nothing you know. Plus have you see the 400bhp plus AGE mota in this months Retro Ford.... nothing wrong with that mota... I think you need to get a life mate
Guest MK1gaz Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 Looking back over your history in the mags his Anglia has beaten you on nearly everything and when it hasnt its only been within 'enths of a second. Dream on mate . His super dooper 190bhp zetec was slower than my old pinto that he reckoned only had 150bhp !!!!!!!! Funny that !!!!!!!
Guest MK1gaz Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 Eat your words Gaz..... & your Hat & your shorts & anything else close to hand http://105speed.hyperboards.com/index.p ... 4&latest=1 At bloody last , 105notmuchspeed.com bits for a proper engine !!!!!!!!! . Shame the lamba sensor outlets in the wrong place though , it should be downstream after all the pipes have merged
Guest MK1gaz Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 4A-GEs? Slow, they ain't.As these 4A-GE engines are only 1600's then 160bhp (100bhp a litre) would be a very good power figuire from one i reckon .
brettp Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 i think its good some one fitting a different engine other wise every one would just buy every thing from rally design and every car would have a cossie lump
Guest MK1gaz Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 I like the nissan SR20 engine better than the toyota one , and it's a 2 litre . Still not worth bothering with though when a 8v pinto/16v pinto will be faster and fit easier .
Mr Sam Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 Gonzo mate, You want to get yourself on 105speed.com lol , 105notmuchspeed.com . He's got a fetish for designing kits to fit slow engines into anglias for some reason !!!!!! dont worry he's not conviced me yet..........8v atmo pinto on the way boat anchor powa!¬!!! although a volvo unit was starting to tempt me could easily see 300 horses out a T5 motor just need a manual box out a 960 then a prop to fit and lots of cutting and engine mounting
Guest MK1gaz Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 Lol , for a youngster you know the score Sam
PIG Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 Plus have you see the 400bhp plus AGE mota in this months Retro Ford.... nothing wrong with that mota... aint that the one in the riders rides bit thats also claiming to be 550hp . i still have my t5r engine box for a escort project at some point as well when others are finished i think
