FredTransit Posted May 30, 2008 Report Posted May 30, 2008 After I heard that road tax for cars and vans registered after 2000 will be going up, it got me thinking. We all know there is free road tax for pre 1973 cars and vans. For cars and vans registered between 1973 and 1999 there were no CO2s lodged with the DVLA by the manufacturers, so there is nothing for the government to base emissions related road tax on. For the PLG non CO2 registered cars and vans, there will always have to be a 'base rate' road tax. You could have a jag V12, but unless the tax becomes engine size related, you won't pay any more than the base rate, that's currently £185 for 12 months, though I know that will got up in 2010 to £200. Some people carriers and relatively ordinary cars that have CO2s registered at the DVLA will be over £300 to tax, yet classics will still be 'base rate'. My point (yes there is a point) is that will this add value to classic cars, even if they are not tax exempt? On a London note, our 3L granny will escape the higher Congestion Charge, as again there are no CO2s to go on and in fact the engine is in reality 2792cc and under the 3L engine size. Again it's beneficial to have a classic car! Discuss!
BIGKEV Posted May 30, 2008 Report Posted May 30, 2008 erm..... what is there to say - untill someone shoots the entire government we will pay not like the french cos they like to strike
antz Posted May 30, 2008 Report Posted May 30, 2008 erm..... what is there to say - untill someone shoots the entire government we will pay not like the french cos they like to strike nail....head
bortaf Posted May 30, 2008 Report Posted May 30, 2008 missed the nail there i think Not sure if the fact older cars will allways have cheaper tax (the point i think Fred was trying make?) will offset the pain of replacement parts or running costs, moded with modern engines could well be the next big thing, like that place that re-engeneer XJSs. A lot of people still see an old car and immediatly think it'll break down every 5 mins and what with all the greenies still not realising old cars are greener in the long run and putting ideas into the general populations heads it will be a struggle. Personly i like the idea i/we know the score and to hell with all the idiots who take in all the official guff and regurgitate it over and over Pluss every time the price of classics go up people do nowt but moan about it 90 - 99 cars will allways suffer horrendouse repair bills due to their complexity and gadget laden fat bodys. At least thats how i see it
capriaddict Posted May 30, 2008 Report Posted May 30, 2008 We might have cheaper car tax for our older cars but we'll get stung in another way, what's the fuel consumption like on a v12 jag or even a 3litre ford compared to a modern car. I would think that mile for mile with an older car you'd pay more in fuel than a modern, so there probably about equal in overall runing costs
mossy Posted May 31, 2008 Report Posted May 31, 2008 its march 2001 the tax changes as my passat is jan 2001 and the tax still goes on engine size, not co2 thankfully! although it can work out in your favour, friend has a vw bora tdi £120 tax per year, parents have a 1.4 fiesta tdci £75 per year!
FredTransit Posted June 2, 2008 Author Report Posted June 2, 2008 http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/road-tax/ This is a useful site to check, but the only OSFs I can find are fiestas and Mk2 grannies.
Smudger105e Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 What irritates me is that the environmental impact of a car is not just the muck tht comes out of the back, it's the manufactring, maintaining and scraping of a vehicle too... There was a phone in on the radio a while ago, where a guy argues that a Toyota Prius is not environmentally friendly becuase of the battery disposal problems, his 3 litre Jeep was more friendly, as it lasted for 3 times the mileage of a Prius...

My Estate now becomes my daily driver....until my finances allow me to afford something pre-2001 . Simple as that really
