antz Posted June 24, 2008 Report Posted June 24, 2008 Can you still get new numberplates that are metal with the raised plastic letters? Not the modern plates on all modern cars or pressed steel ones. I mean the ones that the escorts come with originally like below:
Admin Vista Posted June 24, 2008 Admin Report Posted June 24, 2008 someone was discussing this at the exeter meet recently, can't remember who though................. Try capriaddict, I was kicking round with him most of the day it might have been him.
antz Posted June 24, 2008 Author Report Posted June 24, 2008 cool! I been looking at my front one for ages thinking i want a new one cos its very dog eared (cant really see in the pics though) cheers vista
james1700 Posted June 24, 2008 Report Posted June 24, 2008 i dont know if it applies to all cars antz but a friend of mine just got a £30 fine having a set of plates on his s2 rst these had the effect raised lettering and are illegal. james
antz Posted June 24, 2008 Author Report Posted June 24, 2008 they are the original plates from new james I think your mate had raised lettering. Im after ones that are metal but have the chunky plastic letting on them like ford originally did.
Admin Vista Posted June 24, 2008 Admin Report Posted June 24, 2008 Illeagal Surely not. Not illegal on cars of the right age, just as black and silver plates are legal on anything from 72 or before (L plate is the last one you can legally wear them on)
Long Tall Sally Posted June 24, 2008 Report Posted June 24, 2008 both Carspares and Sureparts sell all types of new / old / retro plates. plus many advets for such plates on ebay x x x
antz Posted June 24, 2008 Author Report Posted June 24, 2008 didnt really wanan deal with dodgy ebay types. prefer my money to go to someone who i know will do a good job
X-pack-Glyn Posted June 24, 2008 Report Posted June 24, 2008 i still have one on my rear... i went to change it for a later one but i just cant do it.
Seldon Posted June 24, 2008 Report Posted June 24, 2008 I don't know whether to replace my original metal & plastic ones with some "modern" plates. The back one is fine but the front has stone chips in it. All I need is the reflective metal part & then CAREFULLY take the old letters off. Will wait until I feel brave.
4parajon Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 There's a fella at the shows that makes them, my mate had some done at the CF show, I'll ask him and see if they have a website.
danny69 Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 I got some new backs made up for mine and just transfered the letters over. I drilled the new plates using the old ones as a template. The company who made the backs was called Simpsons (in Stoke I think) and they charged £20 for the two inc. delivery. Tel: Simpson & Co 01782 212705 They also supplied me with the clips to hold the Letters in place. The bevel round the edge isn`t the same as the originals and i wasn`t blown away by the quality, but now I have put the numbers and letters on they look good. They are available with black or polished ally surround, i went for the polished to match the original.
antz Posted June 25, 2008 Author Report Posted June 25, 2008 cheers danny. Ill look into that. mines covered by stone chips and has started to look worse for wear.( the letters are fine its just the plate) cheers
atomic punk Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 Antz try Framptons - they're just up th eroad from me, they've done the plates for my Dads Victor, my brothers mk2 van, my Cortina, among others highly reccomended They do all types inclding the ally ones with plastic digits but they aint cheap - expect to pay about £40 link: http://www.pl8s.co.uk/page3.html
Trevmk3 Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 Not illegal on cars of the right age, just as black and silver plates are legal on anything from 72 or before (L plate is the last one you can legally wear them on)
