X-pack-Glyn Posted June 29, 2008 Report Posted June 29, 2008 I need one for capri as im having hell of a job countersteering quick enough....problem is no one does one for a capri anymore.. i hear you can fit a escort one but you need to transfer the steering arms.. if so what rack do i need long or short stem? Also apparenntly you cen get more lock, is this done with shorter arms? the arms that bolt to the strutts? if so where can i get these. Cheers. G
Admin Vista Posted June 30, 2008 Admin Report Posted June 30, 2008 Don't know but be aware that there are two different types of steering arms on escorts, RS and non RS and the track rod ends that fit them aren't interchangeable (there are also mk1 and mk2 racks with different threads for the TRE's)
V8ian Posted June 30, 2008 Report Posted June 30, 2008 If using a escort rack on a capri, you should extend the rack rather than the arms, as the pivot point of the steering arms using the escort would be 2" inboard of the capri, and probably would give you give you some horrible bump steer, To do it properly, you would have to have 2 spacers machined up to screw into the escort rack and be able to fit the capri steering arms into, or----- Use a 2.8i power rack and x member, 2.8 racks PAS racks are quicker than a Non PAS rack, so if you dismantle the rack, remove the PAS seals and plug the pipe fittings that lead to the pump, or just leave the seals in situ and loop the pipe so it returns to the rack, PAS cars are normally a real bastd to steer with the pump not running due to you having to push the fluid thru a stationary pump, remove the pump from the system and the rack behaves like a normal rack. From memory quick racks for the capri were never made, just a new pinion, with and extra tooth, 9 to 10 or 10 to 11 teeth, I cant remeber, just been wondering if the PAS pinion has the extra tooth and will fit into the Capri non PAS rack?? sparkycapri Posted June 30, 2008 Report Posted June 30, 2008 i am going to have this problem 2 as i am looking to put a quick rack in one of my capris. they did use to make quick racks for capris as i had a brand new one in one of mine years ago brought it with a set of spax fom the local tuneing shop. it was 2 and a half turns lock to lock, a bit heavy but great fun. can you use a escort quick rack kit to rebuild a capri one? i have got several PAS and standard racks so i might be able to take one to bits and try what v8ian suggested
Ade B Posted December 26, 2008 Report Posted December 26, 2008 I need to improve the steering on my Capri for drifting...... Thought that somewhere would have made a quick rack but seemingly not. Anywhere that is used to modding/uprating racks? I was ideally thinking of a 2.8i PAS quick rack if such a thing existed, but also the issue of fitting it is another thing. Don't you need a 2.8i crossmember to fit this rack? Or could it be easily adapted? Not sure how this would work in my Pinto'd Capri....? Also anyone know how many turns lock to lock both the standard and PAS racks are? Also the idea of an inline electric power steering motor sounds interesting, anyone know about them?
danny69 Posted December 27, 2008 Report Posted December 27, 2008 They are both 3.3 - 1 , I don`t think using a PAS rack would offer any improvement, they are heavier than a manual rack too if you removed the hydraulic supply.
