SAF_Capri Posted July 17, 2008 Report Posted July 17, 2008 .... my steering rack has developed some play and vibrates the steering wheel quite execivly at 50ish, ... i was wondering who are the best/cheapest for a new rack, and is it worth fitting a quick rack? ...for a mk3 capri, used for 'fast road' cheers
cossieglen Posted July 17, 2008 Report Posted July 17, 2008 Now I'm presuming they're the same as a MK2 escort here, but Rally Design do them for £91.50 +vat Quick racks are always worth it in my opinion, but they do make the steering heavier. http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/product_in ... ts_id=7310
SAF_Capri Posted July 17, 2008 Author Report Posted July 17, 2008 I dont mind it being heavier, just would like it to be more responsive and tighter.
SAF_Capri Posted July 17, 2008 Author Report Posted July 17, 2008 now i may sound stupid..but id like to know technically what a quick rack does? i know it means you dont need to turn the wheel ats much right?
antz Posted July 17, 2008 Report Posted July 17, 2008 it shortens the lock to lock turn. i dont know about other fords but on the escort its 3.5 turns lock to lock. if you fit a 2.9 quickrack it shortens it to 2.9..same as any other ratio. it does make the steering heavier though the shorter the lock to lock is.
cossieglen Posted July 17, 2008 Report Posted July 17, 2008 Indeed, the quick rack basically has a smaller pinion that runs along the rack, therefore making the wheels change direction faster, making it easier to control in a slide for instance. You can get them in either 2.9 turns, or 2.4 turns lock to lock. I have a 2.4 turn, but I use my car in competition so need it for when I'm on the raggedy edge Either will make the car feel a lot better and more responsive, just up to you which you'd rather have. When driving, they're not too bad weight wise, it's just stationary that it becomes pretty weighty, esp with wide wheels and a 2.4 turn. That said, you could always contact my brother cossie matt and get him to make you a power steering column for your car
danny69 Posted July 17, 2008 Report Posted July 17, 2008 I think capri ones are different to Escort, also I think the standard capri one may be 3.3:1 anyway. Less than £30 at burtons on exchange.
pauln Posted July 17, 2008 Report Posted July 17, 2008 Capri rack is wider than the escort one. The input from the steering is long whereas the escort one is a stub.
Admin Vista Posted July 17, 2008 Admin Report Posted July 17, 2008 Are you sure it's your steering rack causing steering wheel wobble? That's usually something rotating out of balance. Capri rack is wider than the escort one. The input from the steering is long whereas the escort one is a stub. You can get long stem escort racks too, is it the rack part that's longer on the capri or the steering arms? If the steering arms then surely he could have his existing steering arms fitted to an escort long stem quick rack?
bomber1 Posted July 17, 2008 Report Posted July 17, 2008 the rack is wider on the capri tho still uses the same ends as mk2 escort
RUSTYPUP Posted July 17, 2008 Report Posted July 17, 2008 Indeed, the quick rack basically has a smaller pinion that runs along the rack, Surely it must be a larger pinion with more teeth, otherwise it would be a slow rack
