mrmoo Posted July 27, 2008 Report Posted July 27, 2008 Saw the vid this morning of the 600bhp mk2 escort Im sure in top gear over 100mph is goes like stink, but it seems not to be able to get there due to monster wheel spin So how much power is usable? My thoughts are 400bhp with the right suspension and LSD would be about the limit

Doc Posted July 27, 2008 Report Posted July 27, 2008 imho if you dont ever use the full power then you have too much ..... and if you cant get it down its too much
mrmoo Posted July 27, 2008 Author Report Posted July 27, 2008 But wheels spin and sideways is fun alex im in full agreement with you, but having a milkfloat leave you at the lights cuz the tyres are melting isnt fun and you dont need mega power to spin the wheels and go sideways.....it does help though what im taking about is usable power, so you dont have to be scared when the fun pedal is pressed
TwoLitrePinto Posted July 27, 2008 Report Posted July 27, 2008 id say you dont ever need more than 400bhp in any osf, but then again ive never been in one thats had 400bhp so i wouldnt know! ive been in a mk3 capri that had a 3.1 swaymar race engine revving upto 9.5k rpm on a 4spd bullet box, over 100mph in 2nd, 140 in 3rd, and never tested top speed, dont know the numbers of it, but let me tell you it was quick, because of the spec, she wouldnt pull away very well, either very slowly or very smokey, but once you was upto about 60 she would overtake almost anything! including Sierra Cosworths, scoobies etc. at a guess i would say that was about 300bhp
mk1super Posted July 27, 2008 Report Posted July 27, 2008 But wheels spin and sideways is fun alex im in full agreement with you, but having a milkfloat leave you at the lights cuz the tyres are melting isnt fun and you dont need mega power to spin the wheels and go sideways.....it does help though what im taking about is usable power, so you dont have to be scared when the fun pedal is pressed When i was doing my night course at techy college, quite a few years ago, we actully spoke about this, Bikes the general thought was 150 bhp was great for road use more than enough to go silly fast! Fwd cars 180bhp any more and wheelspin plays a bit of a bugger to acceleration rwd 200-220 was thought enough for older rwds to have as apparently older cars shells couldnt cope with much more without serious modifcation eg linking etc ( We now know though this is quite off ) At the time there was big power Skylines every month in Lacks power his thoughts on this was why do you need 1000 bhp? So you can kill yourself without ever knowning what happened??? lol he was a bit old fashioned but he did teach me a hell of alot. ( Please remeber these were thoughts at the time and times have changed i know )
brettp Posted July 27, 2008 Report Posted July 27, 2008 it dont matter if you have loads of power it just means you can only use some of it in the lower gears
Supercharged Nat Posted July 27, 2008 Report Posted July 27, 2008 power or torque? mines got a little over 200bhp but its the torque that makes it lary, 160lbs at 2000rpm = leathel in the damp... i would think 300bhp and a close torque figure would be the limit without serious chassis/body mods etc..
bmxdave Posted July 27, 2008 Report Posted July 27, 2008 With turbos you can use a boost controller to limit your power in the lower gears. It means you dont constantly rape your tyres... much, but you still have the power up top to keep going.
mrmoo Posted July 27, 2008 Author Report Posted July 27, 2008 the problem ive found with turbos in the past is unless youve got a pukka exhaust system there all or nothing im using a wizards of nos nitrous system, using their progressive controllers the power can be adjusted for each gear too ive ran using a 50shot and i was grinning like an idiot, with the present system i could run 300bhp (150 na & 150nos) the next step is an extra 150bhp
brettp Posted July 27, 2008 Report Posted July 27, 2008 torque is what makes a car nice to dirve having had a v8 the lazy pwer delivery that you dont have to be screaming the tits of the car to get makes it nicer to drive and easier
DEP Posted July 27, 2008 Report Posted July 27, 2008 you can never have to much power fellas Amen to that Pig Saying that, I ve got about 360 bhp and 328lb torque in the mk2 cossy, And i have grip issues, But it keeps you on your toes

puddy Posted July 27, 2008 Report Posted July 27, 2008 you can never have to much power fellas Unfortunately, unless you have been in a PROPER big bhp osf, you will never know the true answer ! puddy

Its 4 linked, and it did have very stiff springs, and non damper adjustable shocks, I ve just changed to 180lb springs and Gaz adjustables shocks. Tyres are Toyo proxys, But just started using some road legal Toyo R888s for drag racing, which i found alot better

LUCKY LUKE212 Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 But wheels spin and sideways is fun ino my dad does it all the time lol alex im in full agreement with you, but having a milkfloat leave you at the lights cuz the tyres are melting isnt fun and you dont need mega power to spin the wheels and go sideways.....it does help though what im taking about is usable power, so you dont have to be scared when the fun pedal is pressed
kevmk2 Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 I have to say when i was using road tyres, i felt that my car was a waste of time in the dry or wet. In the dry it would spin the wheels easily in 3rd and 4th gear So now that i have fitted Toyo R888's on the back it has transformed the car, i can now do 4 seconds to 60 on most road surfaces instead of 6+ seconds and on a hot day when the tyres are warm its nearly impossible to get it to wheelspin, just need some for the front now, then do a track day. And they worked out £28 more for the pair than what i usually pay for normal road tyres

And they worked out £28 more for the pair than what i usually pay for normal road tyres theres your answer there is no such thing as too much power... its just a comparative figure compared to the tyres on the rear! on road tyres imho ~300 ponies on the road is good enough.... unless your a mental twit trying to kill yourself and other people...sideways but on the track/strip there really shouldnt be a limit, theres always room for wider arches, wider tyres, progressive suspension extra weight, downforce etc etc etc. formula 1 cars have too much power to the rear, thats why without traction control off the lines and out of corners they do look pretty slippy on the rear! ~ 700-900bhp methinks
mrmoo Posted July 28, 2008 Author Report Posted July 28, 2008 about 750-800bhp now with the v8s and no TC plus the worlds most sticky tyres oh and 19000rpms very funny to see massa throwing the car off the road wheel spinning more times than a chav in a RWD good point vibrating cake and cheers to the big bhp guys for the input keep it coming
TwoLitrePinto Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 very funny to see massa throwing the car off the road wheel spinning more times than a chav in a RWD lmao nicely put. i can assure you this is true, i let one of my chav mates have a go in my capri, he didnt have a clue what hit him when he thought hed try to get the arse out
mrmoo Posted July 29, 2008 Author Report Posted July 29, 2008 a youthful friend of mine went from novas and corsas to a bmw E30 it lasted for 2weeks before he wrote it off
