peterbilt Posted August 17, 2008 Report Posted August 17, 2008 How do O.S.F dudes looking to buy a mig welder seen some in ALDI 100 QUID 130AMP NO GAS 3 YEAR WARRANTY OR machine mart 199 quid 150amps GAS NO GAS what would you all say
Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted August 17, 2008 Report Posted August 17, 2008 I have always preferred a proper MIG with gas. One mate of mine swears by his no gas MIG, and another mate has always used gas MIG's (but that is his trade). It's what you're used to I suppose. My welder is a Clarke 151 TE Turbo MIG which is the updated version of the Clarke 150 Turbo. These are both gas MIG's, with my mate owning his 150 Turbo for about 10 years now. One thing I will suggest is that you buy a proper aftermarket earth clamp... the meatier the better. It does make a hell of an improvment
over_head_cam Posted August 17, 2008 Report Posted August 17, 2008 Gas is best, but gassless will get you out of trouble if you run out of argon, or if like me you have to weld out on a windy driveway
trevb Posted August 17, 2008 Report Posted August 17, 2008 I started welding about 4 months ago, and got a clarke 160 gas/ no gas mig welder. It was worth the extra money, ive had no problem at all setting it up, no problem with the machine and was getting a good weld within 20 mins of first starting, I dont think it would have been the same if i'd got a cheap one. I'd say spend a bit extra, but i'm no expert.
countrybumpkin Posted August 18, 2008 Report Posted August 18, 2008 i have a clark 151 turbo as well great welder, mine has done the work tht most industrial welder would never get to do. i definatly recomend using gas yes it is more expencie but you do get a nicer weld
Stu_B Posted August 18, 2008 Report Posted August 18, 2008 I've just started welding with a gasless welder, I'm getting on ok with it but reading up about them it does seem to be harder to weld without gas... the way I see it is If I learn with gasless I'll be shithot when I try a proper mig
peterbilt Posted August 18, 2008 Author Report Posted August 18, 2008 Thanks very much for all your feedback on the welders much appreciated looks like i will go with A gas\ no gas welder then got the best of both
keithcdb Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 Have a read at this site mate http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/tutorial.htm
flyingbanana Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 or get one which can use gas or no gas
Mick The Mig Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 I've said it before on this type of post. BUY THE BEST MASK YOU CAN AFFORD. You only get one set of eyes in this life.
trevb Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 I wist I had spent out on a mask that reacts to light! For a newbie it can make a big difference!
