Contract Man Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 2.0 Pinto in the new car has started to smoke a bit when I blip the throttle at idle. Is this more likely to be the valves stem seals as I have been followed for 80+ miles and there is no smoke while travelling. If the lump is toast, it is the early Cortina Pinto with 20 stamped on the side. Is it worth me spending any dough on this lump, or should I just look for a later 205 lump. Cheers Guys
Slammed Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 i personally would go to a 205 complete engine an just have it ported and polished and a decent cam and it'll be nice! btw what car is it in?
Retro-gone. Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 dont presume that a 205 block is the answer to your problems, just read my previous posts on the subject, id go for replacing the valve stem seals and have a look at the bores, also ,maybe replace the rings too.
caprinerd Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 id go for replacing the valve stem seals that would be the most likely cause get your self a head set and replace the sealswhile the head is off give the bores a good check and also check the pistons for slack
FredTransit Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 Or look for an unleaded head, if there is a 'P' cast into the head its unleaded
Retro-gone. Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 fred while were on this subject just which models did they fit unleaded heads to (pinto) ? and where is the 'P' located on the head?
FredTransit Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 Unleaded in the transit was late Mk3 (89 ish) but that's a low compression engine. The P100 sierra and car of the same age was unleaded, the P was near no 4 spark plug.
Retro-gone. Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 so this 1983 2.0's engine wont be unleaded? not that im bothered cos i dont really do the milage to do any serious harm, unless its already been converted.. how does one tell
FredTransit Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 If it's original and on points it will not be unleaded. No idea how to tell if it's been converted without taking the head off. Sorry I forgot to say yes, the EFI ones are unleaded.
Fishtailparka Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 Unleaded head codes are L, P, PP, R, RR for 2.0 M, MM, N, NN S, SS for 1.6 Stamped into the machined face just to the rear of number 4 spark plug. And not all injection heads are unleaded, some of the early ones aren't. The codes above will tell you.

FredTransit Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 Thanks for clearing that up, I haven't had anything to do with the 1.6, all of ours are 2L. Not till next week anyway
Fishtailparka Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 spot on You are bound to say that as I probably copied it from one of your posts somewhere in the virtual world.
