Buy an old Volvo like wot Antz has got. Doesn't have to be an estate, but could be an advantage for lugging bits of Cortina about?

240 or 740 [among others] are RWD. Mate's got the 740 estate. Says it's a bit juicy if you boot it and handles like a barge, but goes well when you wind it up and wouldn't part with it for double what he paid for it.

First of all what do you mean by sensible?

For instance

1. Old skool respect ala Mk1 Fez or mk2 Granada

or

2. Cheap transport something like a mk4 escort for between £400 and £1000

or

3. Cheap comfortable transport that is new enough not to be rotten/rusty and be cheap to run as a daily drive in which case I'd recommend a peugeot diesel of some sort, perhaps a 306 or like my last car a 406Hdi.

well this i will be driving everyday, and i will be using it for a while. by sensible i mean reliable and everyday usuable. im in guernsey so comfort aint to important as journeys are never that long tho i do spend time chilling out in carparks over looking the sea!

i would also like something interesting to drive, and something with a little taste to the look.

i dont ask for much ay!

Ok, my recommend is a 406 Coupe, £1500 easily gets you into a late 90's V6 though it'll cost you a little bit more for the desirable and economical 130bhp 2.2Hdi.

Here's what Parkers has to say about the French Pinifarina styled Italian

The 406 coupé's refined and dignified looks lend it mini-Ferrari status; it's good to drive, residuals are reasonably high and it compares well against its nearest competitors, the Hyundai Coupé and Toyota Celica

Will I get shot for this?

Try a Rover, anything between 93' and 96', I had 2 both cost less than £500, electric everything, drive great, and goe like stink for a 1.4. (If you get that engine size)

Though, I did have a MK3 Fez Popular which cost me £300, and was a great little run around.

Cheap doesnt mean unreliable.

I have a '96 escort parked outside that only cost me £50 and ive used it everyday for the last year.

How about a really tidy Capri. In your finest black. Loads of MOT and super reliable. A snip at a grand. My girlfriend drove it for a year with no probs at all.

Come an get it and spend the extra £500 on pimp daddy wheels or whatever floats ya boat

i ran a old nova which i brought for £50 and ran for 4 years...never even got a service and never got washed in al tha time, scrapped it and got £78 back.......now thats cheap motoring

Cant really recommend a rover, used to work for them and wont go near them now, after the head gasket problems on my last one, and really doggy electrics on a low mileage 416. never again for me.

Peugeot's look nice and go well, but there parts are really expencive.

I say mondeo! ive was given one by my boss its got 178,000 on the clock and it runs from London to the isle of Sheppey every week with no problems.

Also very cheap parts, and you get to stay with the blue oval.

Good luck.

A '93 Granada scorpio i recently bought mine for £530 electric everything and leather seats. run it around for a while then rip the 24v engine out and put it in the cortina :lol::ykt::thumbsup::thumbsup:

And you'd have change from your £1500 to spend on OSF, women and :beer::beer::beer::beer::beer::beer:8)8)8)8)
