countrybumpkin Posted October 5, 2008 Report Posted October 5, 2008 my mate brought his mk1 escort over today to change the cambelt easy job we thought, oh no how wrong, the car has a pinto engine fitted that has been built with a cosworth crank and no matter how hard we tried we could not get the crank pully off, the pully has 4 8mm holes so i made up a puller and managed to move the pully about 1mm before braking the puller does anyone know how to get the pully off?
flyingbanana Posted October 5, 2008 Report Posted October 5, 2008 buy a proper leg puller or borrow one
Retro-gone. Posted October 5, 2008 Report Posted October 5, 2008 mines standard and was an absolute b@stard to get off, i persevered with a hammer.. came off in the end.
countrybumpkin Posted October 5, 2008 Author Report Posted October 5, 2008 buy a proper leg puller or borrow one i've got a few pullers but with the engine in the car there is just not enough room to use one and also the pully seems to be in 2 pieces with a rubber sleave in the middle
countrybumpkin Posted October 5, 2008 Author Report Posted October 5, 2008 mines standard and was an absolute b@stard to get off, i persevered with a hammer.. came off in the end. when my engine was standard the pully came off real easy we tryed for 3 hours and moved it 1 mm to perserved we have

countrybumpkin Posted October 5, 2008 Author Report Posted October 5, 2008 make room , take the rad out and even take the grill off if need be already off still not enough room to get a legged puller in cos of the front x-member which is welded in befor you say take that out
caprinerd Posted October 5, 2008 Report Posted October 5, 2008 only other way to get room then is to lift the engine enough to get room apart from that cant help m8
Miller Posted October 5, 2008 Report Posted October 5, 2008 Hey chaps, kinda cross posted this one here as well: http://www.oldskoolford.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=84334 Yeah, weve made as much room as we can without taking the engine out the car but its still pretty tight (can get a socket and ratchet on but not much else). So you chaps dont think theres any reason it shouldn't come of with a bit of persuasion? To be honest we expected it just to slide off with the bolt removed but its put up such a fight I wondered if there was more to it (although I cant see how there can be). Always the way with these 30 minute sunday afternoon jobs, although having said that this is the car that it took 4 days to remove an oil filter from once
mk1mexico Posted October 5, 2008 Report Posted October 5, 2008 Call me stupid but why does the pulley need to come off for a cambelt change?
countrybumpkin Posted October 5, 2008 Author Report Posted October 5, 2008 Call me stupid but why does the pulley need to come off for a cambelt change? because the belt is behind the front pully and there is a retaining plate behind the pully to keep the belt in line so its not possible to get the belt off with the pully fitted sadly
Miller Posted October 5, 2008 Report Posted October 5, 2008 Its the ancillary drive pulley which is in front of the cambelt crank pulley. Need to get it off the slip the belt off.
countrybumpkin Posted October 5, 2008 Author Report Posted October 5, 2008 dosnt look like anyone can help us, i'll just reweld the puller and try again it got to come off
Twinkle Posted October 6, 2008 Report Posted October 6, 2008 lots of hammer tapping and lots of wd40 they tend to stick due to minute amounts of surface rust! once the "seal" has been broken tap it backwards and forwards a bit once you get a bit of movement and it shoud slide off
