mk2_escort_chick Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 I know that many people have asked for career advice on here in the past and I thought I'd join in. I need help. I've been a supervisor in a shoe shop for 3 years now and I want out. I've got to take it easy at least until March (because of my back), so no heavy lifting etc. I just don't feel retail is for me. It's poo! So...can you come up with some career ideas please, thank yooooou
stevepeanut Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 go to your local colledge or uni. My mate left the navy after a good few years and asked "whats high paid, and in demand?" they said do quantity surveying, and he did a degree in that, and now makes over 30k a year, and companies were fighting to hire him. I need a new career too, this coming xmas its now 6 years I have been fitting loft insulation. Good money but I hate it with a passion
mk2_escort_chick Posted November 21, 2008 Author Report Posted November 21, 2008 I did start college, but didn't get to start my 2nd year because I had my back straightened. I love writing and would like to get into magazine work. I just don't really know how to go about it ...saying that I did sort out my work experience with Retro Ford myself. Perhaps I could try finding some local mags etc and ask around there
SmokeEm Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 Sales rep? When I employ my rep's I always hope for lady applicants because they can sell to builders better than guys can! 30k, company car, phone, bonuses 39hr week etc etc.

I mean I can sell (well...shoes, shoe care etc), but I don't know if i'd be up to the job of being a rep.
SmokeEm Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 Easier than you think as long as you're organised as a person. I used to be crap at it mind so went into management
Trevmk3 Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 Perhaps I could try finding some local mags etc and ask around there or even try the local papers first get your feet wet (so to speak) in that then see where it goes from there
stevepeanut Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 getting a job doing something you love or related to your favourite interests has to be the way to go. I'd love to work messing around with old cars or motorbikes
sab6024 Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 I started out working in Pubs and Hotels, then moved onto a Shell Garage, then shoe shop and even worked for SEAT (which I really hated). I'm not a people person though, so anything to do with customers really was a no no in the end. The job I have now is by far the best one I've ever done and I love it. I work on the basis, that even if I really hate someone, the longest I have to work with them is 30mins. The only downside with my job is getting attached to people and then them dying I realise my job isn't for everyone but I went into it with my eyes shut and I'm sooooo glad I did. And the other plus side to my job is, unless you do summat really stupid, you are pretty much guaranteed work Oh did I mention I wipe bottoms for a living I'm a Carer for the Elderly

Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 Do you like Saucepan's Sarah??? Why not be a Nursery Nurse? My mates wife decided to do that about 11 years ago now and she loves it. Don't forget about the long holidays which are on full pay too
