Lardy Posted January 16, 2009 Report Posted January 16, 2009 is it me or is there a trend to slag off retro ford mag on this forum lately because by my reckoning this site has a lot to thank this mag for as when it started it seemed to me to just feature cars of members of this site so can we lay off the mag for a bit as surely any mag about our old cars is a bloody good one
over_head_cam Posted January 16, 2009 Report Posted January 16, 2009 if people aren't happy with something then they should say so I reckon. A couple of years back I remember people being unhappy with the way CF was going and complaints were made then too. I remember cancelling my subscription because I wasn't happy with it, it's called buying power. There was an awful lot of OSF in the early RF mags yes. So take that content out and you have an editorial and some ads? Maybe an exaggeration but you see my point. Personally I don't think OSF needs to thank RF.
Toby Posted January 16, 2009 Report Posted January 16, 2009 Ok but if you're not happy with the mag - say something by PM I agree, slating of anyone's product isn't best placed in the public domain - it's behaving like our crappy English media who can't help themselves from tearing everyone down! (IMO )
over_head_cam Posted January 16, 2009 Report Posted January 16, 2009 On the same merit, then surely if someone is happy with something then they should only praise them in private. Or is it one set of guidelines for positive comments and one for negative? Personally I think it's good to air your views on a product, sort of like a product review that others can see.
DAZZA Posted January 16, 2009 Report Posted January 16, 2009 Then when someone gets their motor in it.............. its the best magazine in the world! I like it and buy it regularly.
jonlarks Posted January 16, 2009 Report Posted January 16, 2009 I agree if you're not happy with something then say so. BUT, does it have to be as excessive as it has been in the past and sometimes quite personal.
over_head_cam Posted January 16, 2009 Report Posted January 16, 2009 Thing is Jon, who determines how far something goes? What exactly is personal? In the past we have been slated for over moderating the forums. The RF team have the power to moderate their rooms as they see fit, but have chosen not to. So any comments remain - 'personal' or otherwise.
Mk 1 Mark Posted January 17, 2009 Report Posted January 17, 2009 Its a magazine if you like it buy it, if you dont ..then dont buy it its simple as that. I personally look forward to both RF and CF to come out... And like them both, sometimes there really good and sometime ok. But i still buy them both Keep up the good work
boXXer Posted January 17, 2009 Report Posted January 17, 2009 Its a magazine if you like it buy it, if you dont ..then dont buy it its simple as that.I personally look forward to both RF and CF to come out... Ben was good to me last year letting me come to the thrashes and helping me out. He's a top bloke IMO.

And like them both, sometimes there really good and sometime ok. But i still buy them both Keep up the good work Exactly that we all go into the shop and you either have a look through to see if you spot something that you like and buy or you just buy it as you love old fords and then voila you realise that its got nothing in it that you like as said the simple answer is look first and then buy it if you want it,and if you subscribe then you get a couple of free coppies a year compared to normal shop buyers so just think of the crap ones as the free ones
macleod861 Posted January 17, 2009 Report Posted January 17, 2009 its better having 2 mags than none at all
PIG Posted January 18, 2009 Report Posted January 18, 2009 in the same vain as you think it is ok to air peoples opinon on the open forum about this.how would people feel if i slated all the cars on this or any other forum because i thought they where shite etc............... people have been warned about this i think?so yes it does appear one rule for and not for another, all my opinon. my last coment on this as it will get dragged in to a huge slanging match i feel, ive said in the past why sponser this site when all they get is slating.
over_head_cam Posted January 18, 2009 Report Posted January 18, 2009 PIG I think you are missing the point. there is a big difference between someones choice of car and being part of a commercial enterprise. why sponser this site when all they get is slating. If you believe that ALL they get is slating, then I think you may have selective reading
jamesg Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 if folks dont like the mag dont buy it, if you love it then buy it. simple
Morley Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 There is background to this whole situation, something that's best left in the past. RF did feature a lot of OSF cars when we first started, partly because at the time CF didn't want anything to do with OSF and I/we felt that the cars, the owners and the site should get some mag action, partly do with the fact that I had personal involvement in the sites early years and of course the same fundamental reason that any car gets in the mag, because it's good. But as time went on, things changed, CF rightly became more interested in OSF, I stepped down (or similar) from my role as admin and the relationship between the admin team and I deteriorated. Which is sad really as in the early days of OSF we had a good laugh. They were times that I look back on with great affection. It is this vibe that inspires me to make RF as relaxed as possible because, for me, that was the best thing about owning an old Ford - having fun with like minded people. There is a lot of water under the bridge, I can hand on heart tell you that I have no problem featuring OSF cars or OSF events. I have no axes to grind, even if others do. The admin team have a good relationship with the CF team now and choose to work with Simon and Gareth rather than myself and the boy Gambles, and that's their choice. As for the seemly endless barrage of negative comments in our room, I choose not to moderate them purely because this is a forum and everyone is entitled to their opinion. I encourage people to come and talk to me at shows where I will happily listen to any comments, good or bad and talk about it in real life - it's surprising how the real world feedback differs to that on forums, but then I guess that is the joy of a keyboard and a load of wires separating the two parties engaged in a discussion. The bottom line is that just like the admin team, just like the members on this site, I am a genuine enthusiast that lives and breathes old Fords, the only difference being that my take on what we all know and love is laid bare for all to see and in doing that, I'm laying part of me open to attack, which on a personal level is a hard thing to do. But, you pays yer money, you takes yer chances I guess.
Lardy Posted January 20, 2009 Author Report Posted January 20, 2009 Fair play to you Mr Morley I personally didnt know about past history but that explains alot but I have to say that its because of features in retro ford I started really spending alot of time on this site even paying my money and I reckon I am not the only one but I also believe that clubs this big should not stick with one publication as to be in all mags is good for everyone with old fords so keep up the good work
MightySprocket Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 i dont know the the story behind it but could 2009 be the year to build bridges, lifes too short after all

I remember a group feature on OSF members soon after the forum was established - you were at that one, Ben. And we also featured your van not long before Unity launched RF. And there were car featured inbetween. I think our policy at CF was to feature a range of cars from all areas of the scene, modified and standard, based on the cars themselves. Where they were from or what forum the owners visited wasn't an issue to be honest. Steve
MightySprocket Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 like i said, lifes too short 2009 summer of love
