Posted January 16, 2009 Report Posted January 16, 2009 im keepin my rostyles but want a lower profile tyre , at the mo im running 185/70x13's, can anyone suggest a size that will make the car look 'squatter' yet keep the same rolling circumference so the car doesnt over-rev on the motorway or throw the speedo out. please dont link me to that wheel chart thingy cos i really cant make head nor tail of it!
caprinerd Posted January 16, 2009 Report Posted January 16, 2009 if you want to keep the rolling radius the same but use lower profile tyre then go wider tony, i run 205/60/13 but there are somethat use a 50 profile but cant say the width of the tyre think it was 225 whats the `J`of your rim tony
Stu_B Posted January 16, 2009 Report Posted January 16, 2009 The 60 is a percentage of the width.. 60% of 205mm Or in your case tony the sidewall is 70% of 185mm.
over_head_cam Posted January 16, 2009 Report Posted January 16, 2009 Increasing the width will let you have a lower numerical value for the profile, but to keep the rolling radius the same the sidewall height will actually be the same, thus the aspect of the car will remain exactly the same. ie no more squat than before

Posted January 16, 2009 Author Report Posted January 16, 2009 my rims are only 5j, i cant go wide cos of the arches, mk1 arches dont flare like the mk3's. so technical jargon aside what sizedo you guys reccomend? ive got to replace the tyres soon anyway, with this 2.0 engine in they aint gonna last long, just been out in car park and it spins like crazy , which is nice and no i havent been thrashin it already.
over_head_cam Posted January 16, 2009 Report Posted January 16, 2009 To keep the rame rolling radius with your size of rim, youll need to keep the same size tyre. I wouldn't like to go any wider than a 185 on a 5j, you'll end up with baloony sidewalls.

Yes, anyone with skinny tyres will be screaming along the motorway at 4000 revs to achieve much over 65.
over_head_cam Posted January 16, 2009 Report Posted January 16, 2009 Yes Mr. Glam, in varying degrees. Also many have altered diff ratios etc so quite often the speedo is not as accurate as it could be. Or like Scott says, go for a bigger rim. But start saving if you want to keep the same style

Retro-gone. Posted January 16, 2009 Author Report Posted January 16, 2009 yeah ive been in touch with the banding mister and he can band the inside but cant gaurantee the chrome wont be damaged on the outer rim and to rechrome them its £ 500 ! so i darent risk it.
