clutch trouble

took my mk1 capper down to the workshop with me today as clutch has been slipping a bit for a while now.

wanted it done for the ace on saturday.

started stripping it down between jobs.

new clutch arrived so checked it against the old one. new one was too big. bo*****s.

phoned suppliers who checked and said that the one supplied was the only one listed for the 1.6 ohc capri. its not the original engine in it so couldnt give them exact year. didnt matter they said as only 1 listed.

new one was 215mm, mine is 190mm.

they had a ring around and called me back.

turns out mine is from a 1600 capri mk2 74-78.

bad new is borg and beck, valeo, luk (the major clutch manufacturers) dont list them or even make them anymore!

the only company that does it is quinten hazel, but no one keeps them in stock. had to be special order for tomorrow.

now ive got the car stripped out, sitting on the forecourt.

had to slide the box back in (wasnt removed completely as exhaust was in the way, and im a lazy bugger), drop it off stands to get it inside garage for the night incase anyone took a liking to it or the wheels.

just hope its the correct one that turns up in the morning so i can get it back together.

If theres two sizes of a particular part I always order both and send the bit that doesn't fit back...hope its ok mate

thats what i usually do, but in this case all the parts lists only listed one.

it took a call to quinten hazel to eventually find the correct one.

You are not the only one mate! I am playing silly buggers trying to get hold of a clutch kit for the Anglia.

Actually 3 tipes of OHC capri clutch...

 

190mm 20 spline for the 4 speed models (type 3 box fitted up to -82).

190mm 23 spline for the 5 speed/4 speed rocket 1600 models (82 on....... )

216mm 23 spline for the 2 litre 5 speeds/ rocket 4 speeds......

 

if you have a type 3 make sure your getting a 20 spline, if you have a rocket box you need the 23.

 

just to confuse matters further i had to get a special 216mm with the 20 splines to mate my 2 litre to the type 3.

 

if the realease bearings included make damn sure its the right one, the 4 speed ones 9mm longer than the 5 speed and is easy to mistake, if you fit the wrong one it will spoil your day big time (been there, done that ).

Ah, then you can use the bigger clutch, you just need to change to a 2 litre flywheel to use it, its worth doing as the tuned two litres push the smaller 7.2 inch standard clutches to thier limits.

if theyre sending you one from a mk2 capri ( up to 78 ) ( 5 speeds didnt come in till 83 ) it will be a 20 spline and it wont fit the 5 speed, i think youd better get on to em in the morning mate.

 

you need the type fitted to the laser 1600 ( A plate on with a 5 speed shitebox in).

the one i have coming is 190mm with 23 splines which is the same as old one.

laser 1600 lists 215mm only. (thats the one they sent down in the first place. only one valeo lists)

 

i bloody hope i get the right one.

so long as your getting the 190mm one with the 23 splines youl be ok, thats the one all 1600 5 speeds have (at least every one ive took apart which is a few).

 

but if its lited in thier book as up to 78 its iether wrongly listed or its a 20 spline as the 5 speeds were never fitted till 83.

i know. i tried a few local factors but got the same reply "our book doesnt list that".

ive had debates with parts factors in the past because parts supplied were different to the worn parts ive removed, and the correct part i need was "not fitted to that particular year/model according to our book"

But I know what you mean about factors, I was looking to get MkII Cortina stuff and MkI&II Escort stuff for guys running crossflows in their Anglias and none of my local factors could help, all the main manufacturers are phasing out most pre-79 stuff.

 

Managed to find a decent supplier of standard stuff and a source of AP Racing stuff too.

 

 

But this is only going to get more difficult as time goes on.
