personally I prefer the new tyres and as for the handling give them chance to scrub, my yokos were crap for a good few miles in this cold weather, now they warm up lovely and stick like snot to your finger

just took my wheels back in for the goodyears refitting, its all down to what i think at end of day i suppose, and i do prefer the chunky 70 profiles, gives the car that 70's appeal i like so much..

the only other thing im considering doing is either buying 15" superlites or doing the whole 70's jack up, big slots at the rear and smaller ones at the front, but for that il need my arches flaring, which is a difficult to get done nowadays..

 

yes i know the car wont handle well jacked up but im not a mad driver anyway..

i know it may sound daft but i had the same tyres on my mk1 and i reckon its the white lettering,it looks naff . tape them over with black tape ,then look at it

i think itl make a big difference,its just your eyes are drawn to it,and the overall effect gets blurred. try it,,,,,,,,its cheaper than tyres!

tone... i know your not bothered about the white lettering... but that and the 'balloon' tyres is literally what sets your car apart from so many... it's not until you see the two pics side by side is it so clear they look soooo much better before!

thats true... you dont see the 70 profiles anymore do ya, yet they are cheaper and more widely available..

the tyre fitter even said the car just didnt have that appeal with the low pro's on..

 

it seems more lads on here favour the goodyears for my car but wouldnt neseseraly run them on theirs..

Are you after a particular brand? or is that you are just after 185/70/13s??

lads lads you are getting away from the whole point, that point been i tried lower profiles to jump on the modern meets oldskool and i hated them, i can get 185 70 13's easily, thats not the issue,,

chris.. 175's are too skinny for me and 205' wont work as

the widest i can go on my 5j rostyles is 185..

also the standard capri mk1 arch wont take anything wider than 185 , not with the offset i have..

I see what you mean Tony but I think the skinny tyres are only half the problem - there would also be a problem if you went with 185/70's without the white letters because it just wouldn't look as oldskool.

 

Rubber bands look great on slammed escorts but your capri just isn't that type of car, the balloon tyres look the nuts on it - but like I said, it would still be lacking something if you got rid of the white letters.

 

I would try dropping it another inch is possible before giving up on the lower profile tyres though, you mgiht be suprised.

tried dropping till it was nearly on the floor chris and to be honest it just got worse and worse, its not the just the arch to tyre gap , its also the fact that the overall circumference of the wheel/tyre just looked too small for the capri.

as you said they look the nuts on escys , but not the capri in my opinion,

ive got my goodyears back on now and the tyre fitter inspected them and said no cracks to the sidewalls and a good 7mm tread depth so they will last me a while longer..

if i go for another set of 70's il do the old whitewall tyre banding trick

goodyears are back on, im happy again, yes im 200 quid down but its done and dusted..

yeah isaw that, i have my own pics of it with previous non lettered 70's on, but were getting away from the 'large gaps at the sides between the tye and arch' again..

admittedly it doesnt show up in the pic too well but believe me the gap was stupidly huge !

there is a good 2&half inch difference between the 2 tyre sizes..
